21st CENTURY BREAKDOWN ERA: 2009 - PRESENT

   Green Day's upcoming eighth studio album, 21st Century Breakdown is to be released on May 15th, 2009. This long anticipated album has had Green Day fans across the world on their toes for five years after their multi-platinum American Idiot. Produced by Butch Vig, 21st Century Breakdown has 18 songs divided into three acts: Heroes and Cons, Charlatans and Saints, and Horseshoes and Handgrenades. 21st Century Breakdown follows the story of a young couple, Gloria and Christian who have experienced the mess of the 21st century so far. On February 10th, 2009, Green Day's official site had a one minute teaser of a track from the album. Know Your Enemy, the first single of the album was released on April 16th, 2009 with the music video due to previewed on April 24th on all of MTV's and partner stations worldwide, the first time MTV has done something like this. On April third, a 30 second preview of the song was up on the official website and on April sixth, a 90 second preview of the song was played on the NCAA championships. The artwork for 21st Century Breakdown, done by artist Sixten, features a couple kissing. Billie Joe Armstrong said that after their successful American Idiot, they had two choices, one was to set the bar even higher, or to go back to their roots. They chose to set the bar higher and try to make 21st Century Breakdown a success.
