Well it's pretty obvious the song is about your buddies and being there for eachother. But my friend and I remembered the myth on the title: Poprocks and coke is suppose to kill you! So at times a friendship can kill you or have you killed over money or you slept with their girl or something "fun" like that! But most of the time it's good to have friends. The right friends

Being alone on your own, not having anything to do, and you're just so lazy. Smoking, television, and life itself is meaningless so the boring lines with hard riffage and rock emphasizes the boring lifestyle with hard breakage of moments trying to spark something. This timeless hit is the true essence of punk rock.

this song is just about being bored and having nothing to do all day just sit home watch TV and watch the phone.. not about masturbation like everyone thinks... "this song isn't about masturbation i just used it as a figure of speech of having nothing to do... i didn't mean for people to take it literally"- Billie Joe Armstrong interview of '96

This song is about a pot head wasting his life away on the couch. He does absolutely nothing, besides masturbate, watch TV, and smoke pot. It's pretty obvious. Can't go into much more detail about it, because that's all it's really about.

The song is about being so bored that you're constantly masturbating. there was a myth, most likely to try and keep teenage boys from masturbating *it didn't work* that if you jacked off too much you'd go blind. hence "i'm so damn bored im going blind" and "bite my lip and close my eyes. take me away to paradise" the rest is, of course, just about being bored out of your ever-lovin mind

Longview, although the lyrics are literally about boredom and masturbation, it's kind of a song about growing up. It's a song about realizing how you've wasted your potential just by sitting around and doing nothing.
"My mother says to get a job, but she don't like the one she's got."
On that note, he's saying he needs to get a job or hobby, OR he's saying his mother is a hypocrite.

Welcome to Paradise
Posted by David Bryce on February 13 2010
The song is based on the band's experience moving out of their parents' houses and into an abandoned house in Oakland, CA where the band members, along with several others, lived without paying rent. The house was quite broken-down but to them it became home, and this sentiment is described in the song.

Living on the streets, working the downright hard streets, and just making it to have your music heard. The band left home and they're on their own just to play and stay alive in their town. It can be considered lowlife, but it ends up being paradise to them and just what they needed.

This song is about someone finally leaving their home, and basically they are saying "fuck you" to their parents. I think "Paradise" is a sarcastic way of saying wherever that person is living now ('slums', 'broken homes').

This song is about Billie Joe's anxiety attacks (panic attacks) and how he feels that having an anxiety attack is like being stoned. You have no control over what you do, all you can do is sit back and ask yourself, whats wrong with me?

i think this song means that you're a whole like totally different person when you're stoned than when you're not, and i think that they're trying to express all the failure and pressure that's being brought on to them... and how you can be messed up and that's ok as long as you're good at it!! screw what others say! and the crazier you are the more fun you have!!!!

It's about being paranoid and having panic attacks - and as a teenager who has had very bad experiences with both (So bad I passed out) I can say it captures the feeling pretty well, right down to thinking you're going insane and mixing up words in your head. And the line "Am I just paranoid, or am I just stoned?" gives a good relation to how it feels like tripping when you're seriously stoned.

This one's about Billie's OCD and anxiety. Having both of these things myself, this song's one of my favorites. You feel paranoid about everything with OCD and during panic attacks you feel like you're spinning out of control and you don't understand a thing. "Do you have the time, to listen to me whine, about nothing and everything all at once," describes a panic attack perfectly.

Most people think that this song is about a girl whose life is controlled by her parents, but I think that it talks about the life that the society creates for all of us. For me, this song is about a girl that realized that she can create her own future, her own life; she doesn't have to accept what the society imposes.

It's about a girl who doesn't know how to live her life, because people (mostly her parents) keep telling her what to believe in. "She, she's figured out, all her doubts were someone else's point of view." And people keep telling her what to do and how her life will end up. "Are you locked up in a world that's been planned out for you/are you feeling like a social tool w/out a use...scream @ me, until my ears bleed/i'm taking heed just for you..."

Written by Mike about the band's friend Jason Andrew Relva, who died in a car crash that was presumed a suicide. It doesn't mention him by name (well, apart from in the title), but it's essentially about reminiscing about a friend that you've lost. Some lyrics do relate directly ("My friend drove off the other day..."), and they kinda make you think that if you lead the same life as your friend who died, maybe you should rethink the way you're living.

Mike wrote this song about Green Day's friend, who died in a car crash. His name was Jason Andrew Relva, which spells out JAR. His friends are telling him to move on from Jason's death. But... he has a lot to think about. He is realizing that he's only human, and his life will end eventually, so he wonders if the same thing could happen to him if he continues to live his life like Jason did. He knows he has to make a plan for his future, but he's a bit reluctant and really wants to enjoy being young while it lasts.

This song is about a meth addict. The lyrics "I made my decision/to lead a path of self-destruction" explain how, although he knows it's destroying him, he continues to get high and he can't control himself any longer.

Brain Stew

Billie Joe wrote most of the songs on Insomniac when he couldn't go back asleep after his kid kept waking up crying in the middle of the night. Brain Stew is a song about the insomnia he got from all of that waking up in the middle of the night and how it affected him.

Jaded
Posted by Marshall on August 07 2009
It makes sense that this song flows out of Brain Stew, where he cannot sleep, so he possibly uses drugs to ease the insomnia, and then he is "jaded." This song is partly about being high, but more importantly about always moving forward in life, regardless of how correctly you are moving (always move forward; going straight will get you nowhere)

This song is about how you feel when you get high. Billie got high when shooting the video for Jaded to "get the feel" for the video.

Walking Contradiction

i think walking contradiction is just about being what everyone hates - the anti-whatever, and wherever you go something goes wrong and someone is always really pissed

I think that this song is a sarcastic remark on how contradictory they were when Dookie became a success. By contradictary, I mean the age old rule on punk going mainstream and how "true" punk stays underground. "I believe I'm a walking contradiction and I got no rights." Basically, I think they were sarcastically saying that yep, they were walking contradictions and they were not punk, even though they are.

Life itself is a walking contradiction. That's the message here I think. Basically, Billie's saying that everything is contradictory to everything else, and how people say one thing then five minutes later say/do something else.

I always saw it as autobiographical of the band--They were 3 punks who Dookie turned into multi-millionaires. "My wallet's fat...and so is my head".

Time Of Your Life
Posted by S. Jimmy on November 11 2009
This song is about breaking up with someone. Even though you won't see them again, you "hope they have the time of their life." You don't really know what's going to happen, so "it's somethin unpredictable." But "in the end it's right," meaning you did the right thing. And all that stuff about photographs and turning points is remembering you (photographs) and the turning point is the break up. Kind of funny that this was played at countless weddings and graduations, suppossedly a love song.

Redundant
Posted by Sleah2 on February 03 2010
This is a a song Billie Joe wrote when he was going through a rough spot in his marriage. 'I love you's not enough' means that he and Adrienne said 'I love you' too each other but it didn't mean anything, like it was a routine.
1/6
Posted by Pliskin on December 18 2009
This song is about how society is stuck in the constant cycle or 're-run' of everyday life. Hence the line 'we're living in a repetition, content in the same old shtick again." and "like a production line going over and over..." In the music video you see a woman going through the same routine everyday, including picking up a paper every morning, at the end of the song billie joe takes the paper and when the woman can't find it, she screams. this suggests that we are so stuck in this way of life, we wouldn't know what to do if it failed us.
i think the line "i cannot speak, ive lost my voice" refers to how most people are too scared to speak out about the world they live in. but the ideas others have mentioned are likely to be true as well

The song "Redundant" is basically a break up song. You fall in love with someone that you know and say I love you so many times. Saying "I love you" is not enough. You have to actually say more than one thing besides saying those three words

Billie Joe sings about a relationship that has become boring and rehersed, to the point where saying "I Love You" doesn't have a profound meaning. ("I'm speechless and redundant, 'cause 'I love you' is not enough...")

Redundant's meaning, to me, is living life in a re-run type manner. Doing the same things over and over & saying the same things. Until one day your words and actions don't really have a meaning behind them anymore.

Usually, if you're seen as different, people frown upon you, sort of saying "hey, don't be different, enjoy the same things as everyone else. be normal," and Billie is sort of just telling you to be whoever the hell you want to be. Be your own loser, LIKE starwars if you want (-shifty eyes-), be a punk, and if anyone doubts you, or disagrees with your beliefs, don't take it in. just say:
"fuck you, i'm not one of your fucking clones, I'm not trying to satisfy you. I'm a Punk, a minority, and i don't want to be your description of 'perfect', so get the fuck out."

Minority is about being an individual, and being proud of it. This song really speaks out to me, it reminds me of school and telling the teachers to fuck off and let me be who i am, not to try and mould me into the perfect pupil.

*my favorite song*
This song is about wanting to be different from the crowd, wanting to be the minority, not wanting to be like everyone else, being the "diamond in the rough", being the "single black dot on the white sheet of the cookie cutter versions of human beings", being DIFFERENT.

Minority is about being yourself and being an individual. It's about not conforming to what's popular at the time or what people want you to be.

Warning
Posted by Renato Melo on March 03 2010
It's about a thing that everybody misses today: Question everything!
Why we gotta get this opression? If we say something, they tell us to shut up, and the people who do this are the ones who should be protecting us, like police and politicians.

i think that warning is about being ok with (or not even knowing about ) the danger in your everyday life. the way that the character ignores the natural warnings that come with being alive is very weird. (maybe the guy sniffed just a little too much glue).

It's about not listening to the warnings in society and defying em just to be rebellious. Like drinking sour milk (from the music video) nobody wants to but he's doing it to spite authority.

I think this song is about, living without warnings. So basically, doing a lot of dangerous things. Such as, taking sweets from strangers, microwaving food whilst still in the packet etc. This song shows many different dangers, and hopefully meens, don't try any of it yourselves..

Ths song is about being totally oblivious to the danger around you that is happening, but you can still live a care-free life. In a way, it's kind of like being in the right place at the right time!

Waiting

If you look at the video, everyone is happpy and so is Green Day. By this time Green Day had two excellent albums. They've been waiting a long time to be so famous.

I see this as a song about losing your virginity as a teenager. When he says "Well, I'm so much closer than I have ever known. Wake up!" it's about the wet dreams that teenagers have, fantasizing of the so damn waited hour and how it's going to change his life as a 'dawning of a new era'.

Well,I have to say that's my favorite song, but, anyways, I remember I was trying to understand why it was. After thinking about it for a long time, I realised it's because this is the most human song of Green Day.Ok,now I explain why. He's talking about, the chances that we have in our lifes, in this puntual moments that we have to think "I don't fucking care!" and jsut do it, because if we just ignore this moment, we're going to "WAIT" during our lifes, until our death. You have to do it,and don't think about it.That's why it's my favorite song, and that's why is the most human song, because everyone in the world has to wonder about that almost everyday.

This song is really close to me, it's always been my favorite. To me, the song is about life giving you a chance or opportunity that you've waited for. Not necessarily something big, but just something that means something to you. Or that changes your life, even if it's in a small way. The reason I love it so much is because we're all waiting on something to happen, but most of us are too busy with what's going on to realize that all these small moments and opportunities are passing us by.

Macy's Day Parade
Posted by Jacob Lankford on January 16 2010
This album had alot of governmental and economical elements put into it. It really shows in this song. "Economy sized dreams of hope". I think it also has to do with media and advertisments and if something appeals to our own interests were bound to look more in depth to it.

In a way, this song reminds of the poem "Ode to a Grecian Urn" by John Keats.
(look up the poem to understand why I mention this)
Billie is describing all the advertisements he would see if he went into NYC to watch the parade:
"stuffed in a coffin 10% more free"
"Give me something that I need,
satisfaction guaranteed..."
Looking at all of these advertisements, however, makes him reminisce and wonder what really matters in his life:
"when I was a kid I thought.
I wanted all the things that I haven't got...
oh. I learned the hardest way."
"Because I'm thinking about
a brand new hope,
the one I've never known;
cause now I know
it's all that I wanted."

This one's about how people always get caught up in things that don't really matter that much, whether it's commercialism or something else, but that what you need to do is find and focus on the things in life that do actually matter, and take that road and find a new hope for yourself.

for me its about finding religion and hope that you've never known and how it's ...all you've really wanted, and in a world/country where the tv is screaming at you 100% of the time advertising things that will make you happy but only bring emptiness

Macy's Day Parade is about how every aspect of our lives has become something to draw off of for commercialism and advertisements. Even our deaths ("stuffed in a coffin 10% more free") are used for profit. Also, Billie is saying that, even with all these advertisements and other shit in our lives, we still can't find what we really need - hope.
