Ths song is about being totally oblivious to the danger around you that is happening, but you can still live a care-free life. In a way, it's kind of like being in the right place at the right time!

In my view this song is about being drunk and loving it and then you don't care what you do who you beat up or who you sleep with.

A not-so-subtle song about enjoying BDSM (Bondage, Dominance, Sadism and Masochism), or to put it simply, pain for pleasure.

This song was written about kinky sex and lots of bondage. They actually hired a real dominatrix (that Tre apparently knew, according to one interview) to make the whip noises in the beginning of the song.

When asked about the song "Church on Sunday" off the album Warning:
"It's a song about when you're in a long-term relationship with somebody you have to keep reinventing. And it takes a lot of compromise. The person you're married to or that you're with a year or two down the line - there's a lot of different sides of them that you have to come to recognize or be sensitive to or that you never knew were there before. And so likewise cause I'm sure with Adrienne there's a lot of sides of me that she didn't quite expect."
-Billie Joe Armstrong
I love how he explains it. It's such a great song!!

it's about how you can have all the material objects in the world but you might not really be all that happy. It also about how hard people try to fit in with the crowd.

Posted by Dookie on June 08 2009
This song criticizes how people all want to "fit in." People want to act the same, dress the same, and do what is in style or what everyone else does. This song calls for individuality.

Posted by Jen on June 06 2009
I think this song is about people doing what ever they can to fit in with the latest fashion trend. They have no real personalities, they can't stand up for themselves, and they just follow the crowd.

I think this song is about those who are very materialistic and spend more time (and money) on wanting to be part of the new fashion instead of being themselves.

How the fashion world has begun to make people stuck up and feel like they are the best because of the material things they own.

I think this song is about an era where people are miteralistic. where people go and spend thousands of dollars on clothes that they end up selling.

Posted by Jenn123 on June 01 2009
I interpret this song as being about the celebrity lifestyle and how it's not all it's cracked up to be. "You auctioned off your life, for the most expensive price" is basically saying that you've given up a normal life for the most expensive price, which I would assume is privacy or good morals.

Castaway
Posted by Thomas Francis on August 02 2009
This song was written by Billie Joe, and is based on him writing songs which he knew all his old Gilman Street friends would disown him for. It is about him feeling like the roots and foundations of the band have been torn up. He knew that to progress as a songwriter he had to do this, and so wrote the song about being a 'Castaway'. He knew the old crew would not support him. I think it is more about the band 'going at it alone' rather than him as an individual. I read someone even wrote on a wall 'Billie Joe must die' after this album came out...

Posted by Vicki F on June 08 2009
I think it's about this person who is taking a path in life that is leading them into nothing but dead ends and there's no turning back, "of no return and no looking back or down" he has nowhere to turn but also, not back and down means forward and up, which means that we have this outcast character who seems to have gone off the tracks a bit but despite being completely lost and alone they keep looking up and trying to carry on. Quite an inspirational thought really.

Posted by TreCoolFan808 on June 08 2009
this song is exactly what the title says. its about being a 'castaway'. going on a journey to find who you really are or wanna become. you gotta do it alone, with no one around you to help/influence you. you gotta become a castaway first, then you can find who you really are and who you fit in with.
5/6
Posted by Jenn123 on June 01 2009
Could be about Billie Joe giving up trying to be a part of the crowd and "going at it alone" as an individual. Or about a journey of self-discovery or nostalgia ("I'm on a sentimental journey") Either way, I interpret it as a positive song.

Misery is a concept song, about a whole bunch of characters (Virginia, Mr. Whirly, Vinnie, and Gina) whose mistakes lead them to their misfortunes.

Posted by Marshall on August 07 2009
This is clearly a story song about many interesting characters running rampant through different cities, killing and getting killed, and also marrying (and I'm pretty sure two women end up eloping somewhere in the song). One of my personal favorite Green Day songs; its sound is amazingly Aladdin-esque and I love it!

its about getting fucked up with drugs and being miserable after awhile being fucked up. being sick of drugs and being miserable in the end. we're gonna get high, when we're low... the fire burns from better days. the catastrophic hymns from yesterday.

Posted by some guy on July 25 2009
i remember reading that the whole album was about the downside of success and well i think it is about how if you hit fame or become successful there is always a bad side or a chance of failure. "he liquidated his estate." also more generally the ugly side of life e.g running away from home, going broke, and being whacked. In the bridge just before the solo it makes references to the media and how they don't really care what good you do but what mistakes you make and wont stop until they are satisfied.

Well,I have to say that's my favorite song, but, anyways, I remember I was trying to understand why it was. After thinking about it for a long time, I realised it's because this is the most human song of Green Day.Ok,now I explain why. He's talking about, the chances that we have in our lifes, in this puntual moments that we have to think "I don't fucking care!" and jsut do it, because if we just ignore this moment, we're going to "WAIT" during our lifes, until our death. You have to do it,and don't think about it.That's why it's my favorite song, and that's why is the most human song, because everyone in the world has to wonder about that almost everyday.

This song is really close to me, it's always been my favorite. To me, the song is about life giving you a chance or opportunity that you've waited for. Not necessarily something big, but just something that means something to you. Or that changes your life, even if it's in a small way. The reason I love it so much is because we're all waiting on something to happen, but most of us are too busy with what's going on to realize that all these small moments and opportunities are passing us by.

i think that this song means that you don't need any authority or permission to be yourself and to stand out from the crowd. Green Day is a great example of a minority - they are a band that stands out and are not afraid to show it - that's also a huge thing about being punk - you're not just a clone of everything else that's around you - you're just you!!!!!

This one's about how people always get caught up in things that don't really matter that much, whether it's commercialism or something else, but that what you need to do is find and focus on the things in life that do actually matter, and take that road and find a new hope for yourself.

for me its about finding religion and hope that you've never known and how it's ...all you've really wanted, and in a world/country where the tv is screaming at you 100% of the time advertising things that will make you happy but only bring emptiness

Macy's Day Parade is about how every aspect of our lives has become something to draw off of for commercialism and advertisements. Even our deaths ("stuffed in a coffin 10% more free") are used for profit. Also, Billie is saying that, even with all these advertisements and other shit in our lives, we still can't find what we really need - hope.

for me its about finding religion and hope that you've never known and how it's ...all you've really wanted, and in a world/country where the tv is screaming at you 100% of the time advertising things that will make you happy but only bring emptiness

This song is about wanting what you need and not wanting to deal with the crazy advrtisement buisness.

It's about the economy at the time. The song is basically saying commercialism isn't always good.

This song is about how everything in life is about money and material possessions nowadays. Billie talks about how he learns that those are not the important things, but that hope is.
