[pic=Billie Joe (left) and Jesse Malin (right)]102414_bjamalin.jpg[/pic]Last night in New York City, Billie Joe teamed up with local musician Jesse Malin to play a secret gig for famous rock photographer Bob Gruen's 69th birthday party.

The two played an hour-long set full of cover songs, including tracks from the Clash, The Ramones, Cheap Trick, and many more.

Gruen's birthday bash was held at the small East Village bar 2A in NYC, which was packed with Gruen's close friends and family.

During the set, Billie Joe had a few things to say about Gruen:
When you’re 15, living in the suburbs and learning about punk rock, Bob’s pictures are the ones you tend to gravitate towards. When he took us (Green Day) to the top of the General Electric building, it was amazing to think he’d only done this with the Clash, John Lennon, and us.
More information about the gig and a video from it can be found over on the New York Post's website.

Bob Gruen has been a fan-favorite (and band favorite) photographer of Green Day for many years. Jesse Malin teamed up with Green Day a few years ago to form a band called Rodeo Queens and record the song "Depression Times," which can be heard here.

The birthday bash was held after the "Little Kids Rock" benefit concert which Billie Joe was a guest performer at. We will have more details and a recap from the concert later today.
