There's a small review for the re-release of 1039/Smooth and Kerplunk in the newest Rolling Stone magazine.

All videos for the contest have been posted. Voting will start next week. Since we have just under 90 videos, they will split up into groups of 20 for voting. With each group getting two days for voting. We'll have a final vote the following week for the winner and runner-up out of the 4 people chosen from each group.

We've reached our goal to buy the Music Rising guitar. Thanks to everyone who donated, we were able to reach the goal in one day!

Now, time for more kick ass videos on YouTube. The two below are of the University of California Band (Berkeley) playing Green Day songs for their halftime show back in 2005. Very cool stuff.

Basketcase, Welcome to Paradise

Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Poprocks and Coke, American Idiot

We got word in that the next Green Day + NRDC video will be posted on the site real soon. Green Day lost the Grammy award they were nominated for, Best Rock Performance with a Group or Duo, to the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The award was announced earlier in the day.

We're trying to help purchase a special Music Rising edition guitar from Musicians Friend to send to someone in New Orleans who lost theirs during Hurricane Katrina. We'll be matching donations sent in by our visitors, so click here for more info and to donate and help us out. It's a good idea to support a great cause, and any help is appreciated.

Green DayGreen Day made the list at number 13 in this article on Rolling Stone.com of lost music. Below is the excerpt about Cigarettes and Valentines.
The supposed follow-up to their Shenanigans, the master tapes of this album were stolen from the studio in the very final stages of recording. Rather than rerecord the same album, Green Day started from scratch and ultimately produced American Idiot. So happy ending. Oh, if you stole Cigarettes and Valentines, send them our way. We promise we won’t rat on you.

This Sunday is the last day to enter our video contest. Voting will start on February 19th (instead of the 12th) to give everyone enough time to view all entries before voting starts.

Grammy LogoDon't forget the Grammy Awards this Sunday (Feb. 11th) at 8pm est on CBS. Green Day and U2 are nominated for Best Rock Performance for 'The Saints Are Coming'. You can see a complete list of nominees here

Click for more photosMike attended the Mercedes Benz Fashion Show to support designer Swaim Hutson who Mike is working with for the Obedient Sons clothing line. We got some photos from the event with Mike looking pretty fucking spiffy. Check them out in the Pic Vault.

Green Day has been invited to attend World Peace One, a "24 hour Global Broadcast and Telethon". Some of the guests are expected to perform, however, we don't know if Green Day is going to attend for sure yet.

Here's a really great interview with author Marc Spitz about his Green Day book "Nobody Likes You". They mostly talk about Green Day, their music and the message behind it, and even a bit about the 'lost album' Cigarettes and Valentines. Thanks to Delfina for sending us the link.

There is a Green Day website I'd like you guys to check out. It's called Green Day 12301, and the people who run it are pretty cool. They have a pretty impressive section with info about each of the bands on Adeline Records, and they update their site pretty regularly.

We've been adding entries for the Video Contest. Be sure to check them out.

I've been getting lots of emails about the contest, so I'll go over a few of them here.

1) Do we have to sing or show our face?
    - No you do not. If you'd just like to play an instrument, then go right ahead.
2) Can we enter a music video instead of performing?
    - No. We will be doing a seperate contest for music videos in the near future.
3) Does it have to be solo?
    - Nope. As long as you are playing in there somewhere, you can have as many people as you'd like in your entry.
4) What if i suck?
    - Some people would consider that a talent.

We're starting up a new contest today here at GDA. We want people to record a video of themselves playing any Green Day song and send it in. Entries will be accepted till February 11th, followed by a vote starting February 12th to choose the winner and runner-up. The winner will get an autographed Green Day photo, and the runner up can choose to recieve any item under $50 from the GDA Merchandise section.

We have one entry already up on the Contest page as an example (thanks to Brian for allowing us to use his video), and all entries will be posted on that page as we get them. To submit your video follow the steps on this page.

Good luck, and we look forward to seeing some videos.

1039/Smooth and Kerplunk were re-released yesterday. I wasn't able to pick up 1039/Smooth, but I understand it's the same as the re-mastered one that was released three years ago and includes the bonus features on the CD, such as live material and a 1991 radio interview along with some pictures. But I did pick up a copy of Kerplunk today. No extras on the CD, but there is a difference in the music; not a huge one, but it does sound better. Below are two short samples with previews from the old versions followed by the new.
· 2000 Light Years Away
· Christie Road

On Kerplunk there is no label saying it's the new remastered version. However look at the fine print on the back of the CD for "Reprise Records" and "greenday.com". Here's a scan of the back. The front looks exactly the same as the old one.

I picked up my copy at Best Buy for $10. If you're too lazy to go to the store, or can't find them around your town, you can order them online at Buy.com for $13 (thats including shipping). Below are the links for those.
· 1039/Smooth
· Kerplunk

Billie Joe was mentioned at #23 on this list of the 25 best guitarists.
The aggressively catchy riffs of Billie Joe Armstrong were the most important thing to happen to '90s rock next to Kurt Cobain. A thousand pop-punk bands owe him their chops. Though not the most technically gifted player, Armstrong is still pretty darned good. And it's what he chose to do with his playing that made such a difference.

Tomorrow is the re-release date for 1039/Smooth and Kerplunk.

The official Network website was down yesterday and came back online with "Cumming Soon" written on the hompage. I wonder what they're up to?

Someone uploaded the entire video of Billie Joe with U2 in Hawaii. Watch it here on YouTube.

The merchandise sections have been updated. I worked on the layout, and rebuilt the entire back-end so it runs faster. Each of the sections in there were updated with some new items as well.

Good Charlotte has said that Billie Joe has given them a thumbs up and some advice.
Guitarist Benji Madden told MTV that Green Day frontman had complemented the band, saying: "You guys are good, don't ever hold back. Just do what you want and everything will fall into place."

The venue where Green Day started their career, 924 Gilman, celebrated it's 20th anniversary yesterday. (Thanks for Parley for the link)

And for those of you who don't watch the most amazing TV show ever, The Colbert Report, Green Day got a short little mention on it a couple weeks ago. You can watch the video here.
