The LA Times has an interview with The Offspring lead singer, Dexter Holland. They talk to him about the pressure of trying to out-do themselves, and mention how that bar was set higher with Green Day coming out 10 years after Dookie to make another album that took off.
Then there's the pressure from "American Idiot." Green Day, rising above their dookie past, delivered a career masterpiece in 2004 with a concept album that sold 5-million copies, won rave reviews and even earned them a Grammy trophy for record of the year. Don't think Holland didn't notice. "I would not mention those two words to him," one of his hangar buddies says, " 'American' and 'Idiot.' I think he's heard them enough."
What do you guys think? What does it take for an artist to be able to make an album that takes them out of the shadow of their first major hit? And how you do guys think Green Day looks at that same pressure of out-doing themselves with their follow up to American Idiot. Leave some comments.
Here's a very ...interesting photo that was previously unreleased of Billie Joe and Adrienne. The photo was part of the shoot they did back in late 2006 for Punk Rock Confidential magazine, you can find the related links below. Click the photo to view it full size in the Pic Vault. Thanks to arohex for posting the pic on the forum.
Green Day and the Tubbies are in some recent magazines.
Geek Stink Breath posted scans of the cover of Blunt magazine and a poster of the Foxboro Hot Tubs from Blunt, which is an Australian magazine.
The new issue of Kerrang comes with a Green Day poster.
Entertainment Weekly published a list of their picks for the 100 best albums from 1983 to 2008, calling them "The New Classics." Green Day's American Idiot came in at number 6.
And here's something unrelated, that some of you may find interesting to listen to. It's a cover of Hitchin A Ride sung by a soulful female vocalist, that was posted on YouTube.
First off, thank you all for the comments/emails and posts wishing me a happy birthday. I had a pretty great day. Lots of you were wondering what happened to Highway 1 when the Foxboro Hot Tubs released 'Stop Drop & Roll'. The song was replaced with Broadway for some reason just before the album came out. Since Highway 1 was originally released along with the free 6 song EP, we've put the song up for download in the extra media section (#24) for those of you who were unable to download it before.
Back in April we posted that Billie Joe had mentioned at one of the Pinhead Gunpowder shows that PG would be releasing a new EP with some new songs. GreenDay.net has posted info from Recess Records, that says the EP will be coming out July 22nd. We haven't confirmed this date yet, but we did hear that the album would be coming out soon, so lets keep our fingers crossed that we'll get some new music from Pinhead Gunpowder within the next month or two. We'll post anymore updates as we get them.
After about 2 years of staying quiet, we've updated the Extra Media Section. We've added a way for people to listen to the audio there directly from the page, and we've made some more of the songs available for download that were previously disabled.
Please take some time and help us out by leaving your feedback in the comments. We're also trying to work out a bug that is affecting some users, and we ask you to read this page on the forum and leave your input there as well.
For some 'music business' news, in an interview posted on Spinner.com, KISS bassist Gene Simmons said that he blames bands like Radiohead and Foxboro Hot Tubs for the demise of the record industry for releasing their music to fans for free. What kind of bullshit is that? Bands give a little extra to their fans and then they're the ones responsible for the demise of a record industry that has been screwing-over the fans for as long as they could. Feel free to read the rest of that article here, and leave your thoughts in the comments below.
There's a new documentary coming out July 29th about 924 Gilman St, as described on the films MySpace will tell "the history, inner workings, and impact of the club are revealed through interviews with the workers and musicians that have supported the club over the years. " There will also be some performances from Pinhead Gunpowder and a handful of other bands who have been a part of the Berkeley venue, which is now getting into it's 20th year. They have a couple of trailers up on their MySpace.
As the deadline comes closer we though we'd remind you guys that the producers of the documentary "Punk's Not Dead" will be giving away a Squier Mike Dirnt Precision Bass guitar autographed by Mike on July 4th. Just visit this page and order the DVD to be entered. And every time you refer a friend to order the DVD, you'll get an extra entry to win. All the details are on their site.
The producers generously sent us a couple copies of the DVD for us to review and giveaway on the site. We will do that sometime in July, and it'll probably just be a random drawing. We'll give you a question to answer, and if you answer correctly you'll be entered to win. We'll pass along the specifics of this early next month.
As for the DVD itself, I was pretty impressed with it. I'll be the first to tell you that I'm a poser punk historian. I actually don't know crap about the start of punk or much about the early bands that helped kick it off. (I know that's bound to piss some of you off, but early punk just isn't something I'm into). The movie was very thorough in it's storyline, giving praise to the first bands to get big in the scene (Sex Pistols, Ramones, etc.) and gave lots of credit to the bands that kept it alive underground for years, as well as praising the bands such as Green Day, Rancid and The Offspring for taking it mainstream. It included lots of interviews with members of all these bands or the people who worked with them. Billie Joe was interviewed for the documentary and talks about Green Day breaking out into the mainstream and how the band sees their role in the whole scene. If you're even remotely interested in the history, or would just like a better understanding of the influences that brought about Green Day, I'd really recommend this movie. Keep checking back for the details about how to win a free copy from us.
Some more videos of the Foxboro Hot Tubs shows are up on YouTube. These two, linked below, are from the Dallas show. One is a good quality video of Mother Mary with some stage banter, and the other is just a very short clip of the boys taking the stage. By thicksyrup.
There are also a couple videos from the same show of the opening band, Smoke Up Johnny [1, 2], who I thought were really good live when I saw them in New Orleans.
Some pretty good clips of Foxboro playing live are showing up on YouTube, and user Heathyrmc put up some very good clips that we combined and put up here from the Little Rock show. Almost 2.5 minutes, but very decent quality, and still exciting to watch the guys performing. There's also a very good clip here posted by 'hardtoconcentrate' on the forum.
Also, we forget to mention that on Tuesday (June 10) the vinyl for Stop Drop & Roll was released. You can purchase it by clicking here to Amazon.com.
We posted about some Foxboro merch earlier this month, but the page seemed a bit messed up. Cinderblock now has a page up for the Foxboro stuff, including a hat (click here to see a photo with Billie wearing the hat), a hoodie, and a few shirt designs. Click here to view them all.
If it wasn't a 100 degrees here, I'd really wanna wear that hoodie. Oh well, i need new shirts anyways.
We redesigned the news comments so that they are easier to read and all that crap. Hope they work out better for everyone.

As mentioned back on May 27th, Big Cheese magazine has a review of Stop Drop & Roll, and also has an article about all of Green Day's side projects (Frustrators, The Network, Pinhead Gunpowder, Adeline Records, Rudy Cant Fail Cafe). You can read the scans below. Thanks to netty for posting them.
Surprise! There's a new lyric quiz. I tried making it start off kind of easy, and getting progressively harder. So good luck with that.
Read this thread on the forum where we have some quotes from a couple of bands who had the chance to play with Foxboro. We heard from Chris Cote from 'Kut U Up' from San Diego, Red Dahlia who joined the Hot Tubs in Oakland, and Donny from Mystic Knights of the Cobra who played in LA.
Don't forget that voting in our video contest ends tomorrow. So be sure to stop by and check out the 40+ awesome entries we got and pick your favorites.
For those of you wondering what the hell is up with our awesome paint-edited banner up there, read this.
Rolling Stone reported that Stop Drop and Roll sank in the charts this week. It was at number 21 last week, now it's at 103.
Nevertheless, the reviews of the album keep coming and they're all good. This one is from New Zealand. Here's a few more: 1, 2, 3. My favorite line:
With hot-rod riffs and '60s-radio harmonies, the Tubbies provide a summertime gem. The songs are short; the snarled-lip lyrics are sublime. Good to see Green Day having fun again.
A short video clip and some photos of the FBHT shows in Oakland and Crockett, from May 15 and 16, were posted on the forum by hardtoconcentrate.
The image at the top is of the poster from the Foxboro Hot Tubs' show in San Diego. Viar3vrb.
The issue of Kerrang that comes out today has Green Day as their cover story: "In this week's Kerrang! magazine Green Day come out of hiding and cause mass hysteria under the guise of Foxboro Hot Tubs!"
Some people who were waiting in line for the Foxboro Hot Tubs show in Los Angeles said that Kerrang was there taking pictures and talking to fans. Here are the scans of the article. Thanks to shadowiegirl for sending them:
Voting has now begun in the video contest. You can vote in each category (bands, solo, drums, bass, guitar). The winners will get some bragging rights, and thats about it.
There are some really great entries, so we invite you all to check them out and vote for your favorites.
We'd like to see your opinions about the videos in the Comments.
The official Foxboro Hot Tubs site has added photos from the show in San Diego, starting here. You can really get a feel of what a crazy stop on the tour it was. They also added photos from Dallas, starting here. All those photos and more are in the GDA Picture Vault
The FBHT site has t-shirts for sale, here and here. When I go to look at them, it says "image not found." My guess is that they are this shirt, that Billie Joe was wearing in Little Rock.
Thanks to girltufty, we have a scan of the NME review of the Little Rock show. We linked to the online review in the last post, here.
The vinyl LP of Stop Drop and Roll is coming out June 10. It comes with a bonus CD. Andres put up some photos of the vinyl (which he picked up at the show in Phoenix) on the forum.
On the Canadian Top 100 Albums, The Foxboro Hot Tubs have the lucky # 13 album of the week. And in the category of Alternative music the album is # 5. Thanks to melody.
