Green Day's first two albums, 39/Smooth and Kerplunk are being re-released on vinyl today by Reprise Records. The albums are being sold with a 7" single included.

View the 39/Smooth vinyl
View the Kerplunk vinyl

Green Day took the albums back from Lookout! in 2005 because the label wasn't paying royalties to the band, which led to a breach of contract. Lookout! was the home of the albums since the band first put them out in the late 80's/early 90's. Green Day's success actually had a big part of keeping Lookout! going, with the label hiring more staff just to handle Green Day's material. In 2006 the band announced that the albums would finally re-appear on Reprise Records, and were remastered and re-released in January 07 (the 39/smooth remastering was done and released in 2004 by Lookout! before Green Day took them back).

For a great read-up about this whole issue, Lookout!'s previous owner (who left the company years before Green Day did), Larry Livermore posted up a blog a few years ago about the issue.

Don't forget we will be at the "Heart Like a Hand Grenade" premiere in Hollywood tomorrow night. I'll be wearing a Foxboro Hot Tubs t-shirt. If you're going, you should come up and say hi. If you go up to someone else in a Foxboro shirt and ask if they're name is "Andres" and they say no, it's probably not me.

We'll update tomorrow with links to where you can follow our updates during the premiere.

Rolling Stone published a new article about the album. Nothing new in it, except for a couple quotes from the band, and a color version of the photo they used in the magazine. The majority of it was just a re-hash of the same thing they published last month. They did however include this quote from Billie Joe about the album: "The challenge is to do something that sounds sophisticated but also sounds like you did it all in one breath."

They also have a nice little picture gallery looking at their career.

MTV Japan has announced that Green Day is expected to play at the MTV Japan Music Video Awards on May 30th. We haven't heard this from the band, but the industry site FMQB is reporting the news, and the MTV Japan site has this picture up of performers for the awards.

Last night DJ Rossstar interviewed director John Roecker on "DJ Rossstar's Punk Rock Show" which was streamed live online. The interview covered details about "Heart Like a Hand Grenade", and a good portion of time was spent just talking about the band. John mentioned that he filmed about 300 hours of video of the band for the documentary which spanned much of the 8 months while they worked on American Idiot. He talked about pieces of the film, which include a pool party (with some nudity), an m&m party where they "threw m&m's at some cars then just left", and the process the band goes through in creating an album. He also mentioned that Billie Joe plays a song on both piano and guitar (I'd be more impressed if it was both simultaneously) that has never been released.

He also talked about some random Green Day stories that he's got from the years he's known the band. "When Tre gets drunk, he cooks", was one random tidbit, and when asked about something that no one knows about the band, he said "Billie Joe likes to take naps" in the studio.

John was also asked about The Network, and while he said he didn't know who the band was, he also said the The Network will be releasing a new album at some point. He mentioned that 'Money money 2020' was written in one day, and recorded the next, which he called "instant art."

The interview will be posted a bit later today on DJ Rossstar's Stickam page, so be sure to keep an eye out for it. It's very entertaining.

Update: You can download audio of the interview here.

DJ Rossstar created a thread on the forum with some highlights from the interview. Watching the interview got me excited about the new film, and finally convinced me to drive out to LA for the premiere. I will be setting up a page that I'll update constantly while at the premiere to share all the info I get as it happens with you guys. More details on that next week. The premiere is on Wednesday the 25th, and it starts at 7:30pm. Be sure to come back to GDA to see what's new.

The first round in our "Record a Sawng" contest is done, and winning drum entry was Tim D. You can listen to his original recording on the contest page. We're now accepting entries for bass. So bassists, record yourselves, then visit that page to send it in. All the details can be found there.

Carson Daly, host of Last Call on NBC, said they booked Green Day to be on the show. There's still no set date for when they'll appear, but they will at some point.

We should be getting some album details sometime next week. Just something to keep an eye out for.

For now, we're looking forward to those bass entries, which you can send in through Sunday.

Tre Cool will be hosting the 3rd annual MuST (Music in Schools Today) Celebrity Golf Tournament on April 20th. The tournament is a charity event that benefits music in public schools in Oakland. Both Mike and Tre attended the event last year, you can view photos from last year here.

John Roecker will be on DJ Rossstar's Punk Rock Show tomorrow, Thursday March 19th starting at 7pm Pacific, talking about 'Heart Like a Hand Grenade'. The show is broadcast online, and can be seen here. People watching will have the chance to ask John any questions they have.

Voting for the drum entries in "Lets Record a Sawng" ends tonight. A winner will be posted later this evening, and we'll start taking bass entries at that time.
Posted Monday, March 16, 2009 at 5:51pm by Andres

You can now vote for your favorite drum entry on the contest page. Each entry has a Play button on the left of it so you can preview each track. We added the original song to the background so that people can compare it.

Voting will last till Wednesday afternoon, once we announce the winner, we'll start taking entries for Bass recordings.

We posted last month that Reprise Records would be releasing 39/Smooth and Kerplunk on vinyl now in March. It turns out that they will release all of Green Day's albums, as well as some singles and Bullet in a Bible, on vinyl throughout the year. They'll start March 24th with 39/Smooth, and release one album per month through November. The April 18th release of Dookie will fall on 2nd annual 'Record Store Day', which Green Day put out a video for last year. The new album will also be released on vinyl following it's May release.

More articles: Music News Net | Paste Magazine | NME

Reprise will also be releasing a box-set of previous singles, including stuff from International Superhits and Shenanigans, live tracks, and also some music from the Foxboro Hot Tubs and The Network. This is set to be released July 21st. Article from Business Wire.

GreenDay.com posted up a new video (runs about 3.5 minutes) with a bunch of old clips of the band, both from music videos and past live shows. It ends with the words "Now in 2009 comes the encore the World has been waiting for", then the new album cover and the same short "Sing us a song of the century" audio that is currently on the homepage of the official site.

It seems like basically a 3.5 minute promo, a sort of refresher in case anyone forgot who Green Day is. Lets hope that it's more of a teaser of things to come. This was posted on the Idiot Club yesterday.

Update: You can download the video from our affliate, 1039 Sweet Children.

Also, "encore" seems like a crappy word to use when Green Day said in the past that they wanted to move beyond American Idiot. Let the two albums stand separately. Aside than that minor gripe, it's still a nicely done video to get you pumped about things to come.

We mentioned back in October that Pansy Division was covering "Coming Clean" during the recording of their new album "Thats So Gay". Pansy Division is a bay area band that joined Green Day on their tour during Dookie in 1994. They decided not to put the cover on the album, and instead put it as a b-side on the albums single "Average Men", which you can now purchase from here.

Update: Someone pointed out the single is now available on iTunes. You can preview the songs here.

Their new album will be released at the end of the month, and you can read all about it on their site. News comes from Nothing Wrong With Me

If you've noticed on the right side, we've created a Twitter account for GDA. We'll be using it to post up news as we get it, and post the little bits of information we don't always put in the news, or minor updates about the site. If you're on Twitter follow us, it'll be the quickest way to get any updates from us. If you're not on twitter, you can just read the updates on the right side as we post them, or view our twitter page for our latest updates.

We're now accepting entries for the first part our "Lets Record a Sawng" project. We want drummers to send in their recordings of them playing 'Minority'. A few things:
- Must be mp3 file
- Upload to MegaUpload or Sendspace
- Must be submitted by March 16th
- Then visit the contest page and fill out the form

We will post up all the entries next Monday and let people to vote for them. Then next Wednesday we'll post up the winning entry, and start taking in entries for bass. We're doing drums first so that all the instruments following that will all be the same timing.

Pass the word around to your friends about this project so we can get in more recordings. We wanna hear from as many people as we can to get the best possible final thing.

Green Day.com posted up the official artwork for Heart Like a Hand Grenade by John Roecker, which will premiere in LA on March 25th. Click the image to view full size (it's huge, 3.0MB).

They also posted this
Join Director John Roecker for a very special evening on Wednesday, March Twenty Fifth, Two Thousand and Nine as they premiere "HEART LIKE A HAND GRENADE" in the Los Angeles Area. An intimate look of the band recording their album American Idiot...art house style.

Idiot Club members also have the chance at winning tickets to the premiere in LA. The first 100 members to email them will attend. You must be 18+ to go to the premiere (probably because of movie rating). Details can be found at the Idiot Club.

Over the next few weeks we're gonna try something we haven't done before. So it might be confusing and bit a messy, kinda like your first time having sex, but when we get it right, it'll be a grand time. We're gonna have our visitors record a song by allowing individuals to submit their recordings of each track (one for each instrument) then put it all together. Each week we'll vote for our favorite track to be included in the final thing. More details can be found on the contest page.

The forum voted a few months ago that we should try doing Minority first. So starting on Monday we'll start taking submissions of drum recordings for the song. Then we'll put all the entries up for a vote, and move on to bass, then guitars, vocals, etc til we have ourselves a full song.

Depending on how this first one goes, and by then we should have a better idea of how everything will work out, we'll move on to another song. Again, details can be found on the contest page. Some things might change around as I get suggestions from people.

We got in a handful of emails yesterday from people in various parts of the US saying their local radio stations said a new Green Day song, "Know Your Enemy" will be played on April 20th or 21st. Which suggests that it might be the first single.

American Idiot was first played on the radio August 3, 2004. 7 weeks before the album came out. Having a single out in April would put it about a month from the full release, so it seems very likely. Even more likely since we're hearing about it from different radio stations. But of course the band hasn't confirmed this. We're expecting some news about this stuff in the next couple weeks.

The "Rock Candy" blog from the the Arkansas Times is reporting that Jeff Matika, musician from Little Rock, AK, is joining Green Day on the next tour. This is the only source we've heard from.

I don't have time to get all private investigator on this (I'm writing this from an airport heading back home), my first assumption reading this was that maybe it was someone Jason White knew and suggested to the band.

The article mentions that Billie Joe would like to spend more time playing frontman during shows. Before people get all nostalgic and we start seeing "aww I love Billie playing the guitar" comments, lets remember that they did already use a 3rd guitarist for a couple songs during the American Idiot tour. I'm sure Billie will continue playing for the songs he wants to.

NME has an interview with sixten, the artist who inspired the design of the new album cover. He addressed some criticism aimed at the design saying it looked similar to Bansky's work, and the cover of Blur's album "Think Tank".

A hard hat signed by Green Day is up for auction on the Clothes Off Our Back charity auction site. The money raised will go to benefit Habitat for Humanity. Many of you will remember that Billie Joe, along with his family and Jason White, went down to New Orleans in 2007 with Habitat for Humanity to help rebuild a house destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.

The auction ends in 8 days, and is currently at $200 (totally worth more for the fact that it benefits a great organization).

Director John Roecker posted this status on Facebook a couple days ago
excited about March 25th! Going to be a very Green Day. Confirmed

And yesterday the Idiot Club posted "If you live in the Los Angeles area, keep March 25th free."

Without anywhere to point to for more details, we believe this will be the date for a screening of the documentary "Heart Like a Hand Grenade" which is the making of American Idiot. We can only hope this means that a full DVD release will come later this year.

Alright, too much assuming for one day. All we know is that something related to Green Day is happening March 25th in Los Angeles and John Roecker is involved. Hopefully more details to come.

We have a new editorial up written by Cheryl. She writes about the excitement the past couple weeks surrounding all the new information we've had about the next album. Take some time and read it here. You can read some of our previous articles right here.

My first impression was a good one, and I loved it, goose bumps and all. It sounded classic, it sounded clean, it sounded antiqued but on the verge of a new frontier for the band. It made this excitement swell up in me that's been dormant for a while and it certainly had me desperate for more!

Sixten, the artist whose work inspired the design for Green Day's new album cover, posted up a blog about his original artwork to give people some more details about where it started, and said
I love their passion, and just had to make a stencil out of it to spread the love. I've painted it a bit here and there on my travels over the years .... Glad it inspired someone.

Chris Bilheimer was the art director for the new cover, who has worked with the band for covers of American Idiot, Jesus of Suburbia, Bullet in a Bible, Shenanigans, International Superhits, Warning, and some Nimrod singles. I think the biggest similarities can be seen between 21st Century Breakdown and Shenanigans; it also reminds me of the JOS single.

I really like the new design because of it's similiarity to Shenanigans, which has always been my favorite cover. The spray-paint design gives it a much more "do-it-yourself" feel, and I think that fits extremely well with who Green Day is. Shenanigans is the only album cover I have a poster of, but I think once posters of the new cover become available, it'll get a spot on my wall as well.

The documentary ONE NINE NINE FOUR, which "documents the birth, growth, and explosion of punk rock in the 90's," will be released this year. We've been talking about this documentary for a while, which will include an interview with Billie Joe alongside others like Larry Livermore (Lookout! Records), Rob Cavallo (Green Day's Producer), Tim Armstrong (Rancid), Fat Mike (NOFX), Tom Delonge & Mark Hoppus (Blink 182), and about a dozen other people directly involved with the bands that took punk rock to a new level. You can find more info about the movie here .

Why is this the perfect year for them to release the documentary?
...not only is it the 15 year anniversary of punk rock breaking into the mainstream in 1994 but Blink 182 have just reformed to make a new record & tour and Green Day are releasing a new record this year. Not to mention it's the 25th anniversary for NOFX, Rancid will hopefully be releasing their highly anticipated new record and The Offspring are one of the biggest bands on radio right now(again).

Visit their site to watch a 6 minute trailer for the film.

Below are the scans for the Rolling Stone article titled "Green Day Go Bigger on 'American Idiot' follow up". Referencing the Kinks and The Who, Billie sums up the new album with
I love those songs. How do you take that '65-'66 vibe and make it your own? What would be Green Day's interpretation of that

Scans from the official site.

Rolling Stone will be hitting store shelves today, go pick up a copy of the magazine with Taylor Swift on the cover. The article "Green Day's New Epic" is one of the featured sections.

We won't be posting the scans for this article right away. We encourage people to go out and purchase the magazine first. It's a decent read with a few details, but nothing ground-breaking. They did sit down and interview the band and producer Butch Vig.

There are some new banners available for you guys to use on your MySpace/Blog/Websites/whatevers to help spread the word about the upcoming album, you can find the new banners on this page (along with the code to post them).

[We are aware of the leaked version of the demo floating around the internet. The version that was released was leaked without the bands permission, and is an old version of the song, not what will be on the CD. We will not allow any comments/posts with links to the song, or details on how to get it. We will respect the bands wishes since they didn't want this out yet]

SPIN magazine also previewed the six songs from the new album and posted their review online. More positive stuff being written - they describe the title track as "Green Day's most epic song yet". Most places that have heard the new songs all suggest that "21 Guns" is something to look forward to. So we wait.

Reprise will be re-issuing 12" vinyl's of 1039/Smooth and Kerplunk, which are listed at Interpunk for $20, with a release date for March 24, 2009. 1039/Smooth | Kerplunk

Tre Cool was listed in IGN's 10 Great Punk Drummers.
Record after record Cool lays down track after flawless track of pop/punk gold. It's his attention to detail that makes him so important to the California band. He never gets in the way of the group's gigantic hooks but he sneaks in interesting little flourishes that always make the songs better.

To continue with this near daily trend of a major music network reviewing the first part of the album, Billboard has posted their review, "Green Day Roars Back With 'Breakdown'".

In addition to their short review, they add
Green Day will begin a North American arena tour in early July, to be followed by shows in Europe. The band will hit Japan, Southeast Asia and South America before returning for more North American shows in 2010.

Those of you worried that Green Day won't be playing in your country, just sit tight. This looks like a simple outline, and we'll have to wait till official dates are announced for each leg of the tour. That said, I'm pretty damn excited about this. Time to start saving the pennies.

MTV News also had the chance to listen to and review 6 songs from the new album, 21st Century Breakdown. They seems to give a bit more detail about the music, giving many more references to the styles that certain parts of the songs remind them of. They also posted a few more lyrics referencing those songs. Hearing these initial reviews has really got me excited for this album. I was already excited solely because it was a Green Day album - but hearing reviews that this album (from the previews they've heard) seems to hold up against the greatness of American Idiot really makes me happy.

Read MTV's Article
Green Day cover a lot of ground, and they do it with a style and swagger that's admirable, especially given all the expectations weighing on them this time around. Taking cues from classic rock, going for the massive once again, they're not backing down from the fight. Apparently, Breakdown will feature 16 songs. It's not known whether they all pack as much punch as the ones we heard last night, but we can't wait to find out.

Rolling Stone published their article online of some of the new songs they've heard. They talk about the music and posted some lyrics. They also reveal two more song titles, Restless Heart Syndrome & 21 Guns

Read the article
The title track quickly kicks into a familiar Green Day three-chord blast, but morphs into multiple movements like some of the more rock-opera-heavy numbers on American Idiot. “My generation is zero/I never made it as a working class hero,” Armstrong sings, making a reference to the John Lennon track the band covered in 2007. After a big drum breakdown, the song winds into a slower “Bohemian Rhapsody” moment. By contrast, “Know Your Enemy” is a straight-ahead rock song with a chanty “oh-way-oh-way” refrain. Opening powerfully like an AC/DC track, Cool drums furiously as Armstrong sings “Silence is the enemy so give me revolution.”

They also confirm "the trio will kick off a massive world tour of indoor arenas in July." Official dates will come later.

Green Day is getting some very welcome press about the album announcement. I'm excited to see so many places talking about the guys, and most seem as excited as we are. A couple articles:

USA Today: From this (Green) Day Forward
XFM.co.uk: Green Day Name New Album

Rolling Stone will be publishing an article about the new album in next week's issue. They mentioned that they visited the band in the studio and to expect the full story out next week. Read their artcile about last night.

Green Day.com has a new splash page designed with the cover art.

There has been a lot of news coming out for the new album, and I'd like to remind everyone that J'net continues to make constant updates to the New Album page. You can find everything there, from when we first heard about the new album to this weeks news about the cover/name and the short teaser posted yesterday. Here is the cover art for the new album (posted on GD.com). It reminds me of the Shenanigans cover art, which is still my favorite cover. Cath (in the comments) made this perfect connection to the art from what Billie Joe described the album as in the AP article: "The best way I can describe it right now is that it's like an apocalyptic angry mob with a city on fire and flashing lights while making out with your girlfriend."

As mentioned in the post below, Green Day will be presenting at the 51st Annual Grammy Awards - which will air tomorrow night (Sunday) at 8pm EST/PST on CBS.

Unfortunately CBS won't be airing the show live across the United States. It will be live at 8pm Eastern, but won't air on the west coast till 8pm PST, a full two hours afterward. That is, if I understood the listing correctly. For those of you in England, the full program will be airing Monday night at 9pm on ITV2.

We plan on getting the video and photos up as soon as we get them in. There's a few people who will be trying to get the video for us. Photos will be posted as soon as they come in (we assume the guys will be arriving on the red carpet).

We will be updating the news all afternoon as we get new stuff in. We're still looking around to see if there will be a live stream anywhere online. If there is, we'll post a link before the show. But if you can't see the show live, just be sure to stop by here and the forum to get all the updates. We definitely plan on having anything relevant to Green Day up immediately. It's what we do.

Green Day will be attending the 2009 Grammy's this Sunday (February 8th) to present an award. We don't know which award yet, but the band did confirm that they'd be there.

They also told us that "cool things" will be happening on Sunday. The official site has been updated saying "Watch out for a surprise this Sunday night at the 51st Grammy Awards". We'll wait and see, and pass along anything else we hear.

The Grammy's will air on CBS at 8pm EST/PST. We plan on getting the video of their award presentation as soon as we can. We'll also be sure to pass along any more info we get if something else will be happening Sunday.

Recess Records (who released the new Pinhead vinyl) will be releasing a Pinhead Gunpowder "Greatest Hits" CD/Vinyl this March. Exact release date is still unknown, but we know it'll be that month.

Equally exciting is that the entire Pinhead discography will be released on both vinyl and CD a bit later in the year on Recess. They're currently aiming for an early fall release of the 5 albums (August or September). The albums are: Jump Salty, Carry The Banner, Goodbye Ellston Ave, Compulsive Disclosure, and Shoot The Moon.

I'll admit that I still don't have any full older albums from them. I've downloaded a few songs that I've come across and really liked, but aside from the new "7"" I haven't bought any others. I'm pretty excited to see all these re-released, they'll be much easier to purchase - and I'm happy a "Greatest Hits" is coming out. Good way to introduce people to some of their other stuff.

You can read up on the Recess Records site (the list and release dates are toward the bottom, on the right, under the header "Upcoming Releases). [Thanks mplsloseroftheyear for posting this info on the forum]

Metal Hammer posted up a blog with a quote from Punktastic about Green Day and AC/DC headlining the 2009 Reading/Leeds festival in England taking place at the end of August.

Many of you will remember that Green Day chose this festival back in 2004 to play their first show before American Idiot came out. It's something I've kept on the back of my mind; thinking it seemed plausible to have Green Day choose this event to help with a world tour.

There's no confirmation about this, not from Green Day or the festival organizers. I feel a little dirty passing on 2nd/3rd/4th hand information - but rest assured that as soon as we found out whether or not it's true, we'll post it up.

Green Day's first major album was released 15 years ago today. Dookie was the album that brought this band to the attention of the world. It helped Green Day connect with a generation like few had done before, and 15 years later it remains their best selling album with 10+ million copies sold world-wide. I actually can't find the official number of how many it's sold worldwide, only that it was certified in 1999 as selling over 10 million (and I don't know if that was US only).

Happy 15th, Dookie. I know it was the first album that many people heard of Green Day, I encourage you guys to leave a comment about how this album had an impact on you.

Time to kill some rumors. First up, Chartattack was reporting that Green Day's album would be out May 5th. Their source, which was quotes elsewhere on the net, was Warner Music Canada. We checked with the band, who let us know that date was not true. One site has since removed the information and mentioned it was a mistake. We expect the actual release date to be coming kinda soon.

We also posted the rumor about Green Day attending the Coachella festival later this spring. Coachella organizers posted the billing list, no Green Day :(

Just sit tight. We'll be getting more Green Day than we can handle in a couple months. In the meantime, I still want more Green Day quotes.

If you look closely in this new video from MacBeth footwear of Tom DeLonge talking about the coming apocalypse, you can see Mike Dirnt's shoe design, which is expected sometime this year. Click the image on the right for a still of that video. We'll post better quality pictures once MacBeth releases some. [Thanks to Kaitlin for the tip]

Photographer Ryan Russell posted two more Mike Dirnt photos on his site (with one of them actually sitting on his front page). He also let us know that more will be posted up next week, so check back for those. Click the photos for larger versions.

I finally got the random quote at the top of the site to work. If you know some Green Day quotes we should use (that aren't already in the "Quotes" section), please visit the forum and leave your suggestions.
