WOW!!!!!!!!!!! I don't think there is any other way to describe Green Day live. Much better than last time they came in March and even then they were unbelievable. I was in the second level to the right of Green Day in the Green seats in the fourth row
It started off with My Chemical Romance taking the stage about 6:45. I've never been a huge fan of MCR but I think they performed very well for a support act. They were getting the crowd going and they played until just past 7:15.
Jimmy Eat World came on shortly after. They also did a bang up job. Again I don't know a lot of their songs but when they finished with the Middle, everyone was loving it. Jim Adkins then smashed his guitar (Good on him!)
In the big break between Jimmy Eat World and Green Day we got a mexican wave goin. Then the Pink Bunny came on just before green day to get the crowd going with the YMCA and the great classic "HEY HO LETS GO"
That opera sort of music came on (Dont know what its called) as the Telstra Dome's roof started to open. Green Day walked onto the stage and Billie broke into American Idiot shouting out "ALRIGHT MELBOURNE!" and "AUSTRALIA" all the way through it. At the End Of American Idiot Billie said "Welcome to the Green Day tour 2005!"
Billie Joe then started talking to the crowd saying about how the next song had lots of meaning and wasn't a song to just dance to. Of course it was the new single Jesus of Suburbia. By City Of The Damned the whole crowd were so into the concert already. JOS ended with a bang
Next it was Holiday with Billie Joe giving his usual F**k You To George W Bush. This song was huge and everyone loved it. At the end of Holiday an explosion of fireworks went up. Next was Are we the waiting and St. Jimmy which Billie Joe dedicated to the band the Living End. (In case you don't know Living End are an Aussie Rock band, Prisoner of Society...). A not so common performance of Give Me Novacaine was next.
That was the end of the American Idiot album for the mean time. Tre broke into longview and it wasn't long before mike had joined in him with that wicked bass riff. Green Day got the crowd to join in for parts of Longview and that was awesome. Longview was followed by Hitchin a Ride. That was amazing with him getting the crowd going again. They stopped playing and Billie got everyone to cheer. Then he said "Now thats how we do it in Australia" and everyone went off tap! He got everyone to sing 1-2-1-2-3-4 a couple of times and when the song starts going really loud and the solo comes in, fire went up and everyone in the stadium felt the heat from the massive flames. Billie then got a couple of audience members to spray people with hoses.
We then had a competition with the other side of the stadium to see who could cheer the loudest. Needless to say my side won. From that they went into Brain Stew. That was pretty cool. Billie Joe then introduced everyone, Jason White, Jason Freese, Ronnie Blake(I think thats his name), Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool. Tre then got up and ran around for everyone. Green Day then went into Jaded, the second part of Brain Stew.
Green Day then started Knowledge, a classic from their debut album 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours. In the middle of the song Green Day got a drummer, a bassist and a guitarist on stage to help play the song. Knowledge is originally a song by a band called Operation Ivy and this band used to get people on stage to help play their songs so this is a tribute to Operation Ivy. The drummer was awesome giving us a great finish. The bass chick rocked! Giving us a nice wrap up at the end and I consider more than worthy to play Knowledge. The guitarist I think was named Chris. When Billie said Where ya from? he said Australia. Billie then said "Well your from the greatest country in the world then" and everyone cheered. He played well as he said he had only been playing for 4 months. Hats off to you Chris!
They then played She which was awesome too. Following that was King For A Day/Shout. That was great, especially when They were all on the ground after the "little bit softer now" part Billie sang always look on the bright side of life and then stand by me. They finished that with a "Nobody likes you" line.
Wake Me Up when September Ends was next. Everyones mobile phones and lighters were up for that. Then Billie said "One More" and broke into Minority. This was one of their best for the whole night. The crowd was involved we got a brilliant solo from Billie this time (not Jason), and also good work on the harmonica. Billie gave us his speech that we were the leaders and that rocked! They finished the song with a bang and ran off stage.
The Encore then came with everyone wanting more. Special guest Chris Cheney from the Living End came on (Awesome!) and he helped them play I Fought The Law and The Law Won. After that number, Cheney went off stage and Green Day continued with massive hit Boulevard Of Broken Dreams. I don't think that could have been played better. They then played a magnificent cover of Queen's "We Are The Champions" and once more departed from the stage.
Coming back with a SECOND ENCORE they played their other Nine-Minute-Wonder off the American Idiot album called Homecoming featuring Mike's "Nobody Likes You" part which was awesome! and Tre Cool singing his "Rock 'n' Roll Girlfriend" part. Tre did excellent on vocals and the whole song was amazing. The rest of the guys went off and left Billie to do his electric guitar version solo of Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life). That had lighters and mobiles in the air once again and just about everyone wanted to reach out and touch Billie Joe. An awesome performance of Good Riddance and then fireworks went off for the next minute and a half as Green Day all came back on to farewell their Melbourne crowd.
For the last American Idiot concert ever that was simply amazing. It was a huge honor for Melbourne to be hosting the last ever American Idiot concert and it was a great honor to be there. I'm sure everyone will agree that it was a fantastic performance and a great night. Can't wait until they return with their new tour. |
