  • First performance of Paper Lanterns since 2019.

  • Maria: "When I first discovered Green Day at 12, I read about their crazy Jakarta show on the Insomniac Tour and thought it would be cool to see them there one day. I never thought I actually would. As my flight descended to Soekarno-Hatta Airport, I thought, 'what the fuck have I done?' The taxi driver who took me into town said 'I can't believe you came to JAKARTA just to see GREEN DAY' and honestly, neither could I.
I arrived at the venue around noon. Late by British standards, of course, but early enough in Jakarta. There were about 20 people there. I'd completely relaxed. It was just another queue in a city that I actually liked a lot. I even had someone to chat to when a Filipino fan arrived. He was seeing Green Day for the first time, as was the Indonesian man behind us who'd sat on a bus for over 18 hours to get there and said, 'Green Day is my family.' Thanks to a Singaporean fan I met at the ticket gate and the lovely Indonesians around us, I got onto the barrier where the crowd was split.
I'd never heard any crowd as loud as this one when Bohemian Rhapsody started! They were even louder when Green Day came on and we sang along to The American Dream Is Killing Me. I'd told myself I wouldn't go too crazy because I nearly came down with heat exhaustion in the queue, but I couldn't help it when Paper Lanterns started. I heard that Green Day played Forever Now in Bangkok, but thought it might be a one-off... and then they played it. It took a few seconds for me to realise it was actually happening. And then I screamed like I was still 12. That is hands down one of the best Green Day songs and possibly their best live song. I never thought I'd be fortunate enough to hear it again.
There were quite a lot of phones out and Billie had told people to put them away in Longview, but of course, he had us get them back out for Boulevard of Broken Dreams. It was totally surreal to see him holding up the Indonesian flag in Are We the Waiting. I thought, 'check this out, 12 year-old self. You will see Green Day in Jakarta.'
As incredible as it was to hear Paper Lanterns and Forever Now, Bobby Sox was probably the highlight for me. The show was coming to a close and it was all worth it. Billie asked 'do you want to be my girlfriend?' and 'do you want to be my boyfriend?' before starting the song and both times, men and women screamed 'YEEEEES!!!'
When he came back with his acoustic guitar to play Good Riddance, he joked, 'Jesus, how many people here can play Good Riddance? Well, I can play it too!' He asked if we wanted him or someone from the crowd to play it.
    'YOU!' roared the crowd.
'And I won't mess it up,' Billie replied. He did burp though.
I met people from all over the world on the way out - Philippines, Singapore, India, China, Saudi Arabia, Russia and South Korea. I will definitely never forget that time I 'went to Jakarta just to see Green Day.'"

I think that's the first time that Billie sings the "I ain't gonna stand in line no more" just like studio version, actually.

Really hope that Forever Now makes it in to the festival sets as well, even though I doubt it.

Also, Welcome To Paradise is a really good "opener for the Dookie songs" after TADIKM

The taxi driver who brought me into town said 'I can't believe you came to JAKARTA just to see Green Day' and I can't believe I'm coming here to say I did indeed go to Jakarta just to see Green Day. ? Back when I first became a fan, I read about the crazy Jakarta show in 1996 and thought I'd like to see them here one day, but I never thought I'd seriously do it. Since I was taking my mum to Japan anyway, I bought a ticket as soon as they went on sale and as it got closer I was like, 'what the fuck have I done?'  But I got here and arrived at the venue around noon. There was no shade in the queue and I seriously thought I was coming down with heatstroke. Actually got up to leave at one point because I felt so faint but I dunked a whole bottle of water on my head and cooling towel (highly recommend the Sukeen ones) and started to feel better. I got lost on the way in because the place was huge but thanks to a Singaporean fan and some lovely Indonesian people I got onto the barrier where the crowd was split. The staff gave out plenty of water so by the time Rebellion Rose finished I felt much better. Rebellion Rose were really good.  That was the loudest crowd I've ever been in for Bohemian Rhapsody and that carried on into American Dream. I was impressed! Haven't heard anyone screaming that song so loud before. The crowd gradually got a bit quieter, probably because of the heat. Several people had to be pulled out. I'd decided I wouldn't jump or go too crazy because of the potential heatstroke but I couldn't help it when Paper Lanterns started. Loved hearing that song again and Forever Now!!! Hands down one of the best Green Day songs, especially live, and I never thought I'd be fortunate enough to hear it again.  There were quite a lot of phones and Billie told everyone to put them away during Longview. Of course he then had us all get them back out for the flashlights in Boulevard. The girl who got onstage for Know Your Enemy forgot the lyrics and Billie was so sweet about it. She sang the chorus to make up for it and she rocked! As a Muslim it made me so happy to see someone in hijab onstage ? Billie behaved perfectly appropriately too, just giving her a fist bump. Unrelated to the gig itself but it was surreal to see a musholla at a Green Day show, with the sign in the Saviors font and everything? I ended up going as crazy as ever throughout the show but the heat exhaustion must have passed because I never felt ill again. Bobby Sox was the highlight for me. Billie asked 'do you want to be my girlfriend?' and 'do you want to be my boyfriend?' before starting the song and both times men and women screamed 'YEEEEES!!!' When Billie came out for Good Riddance, he joked, 'Jesus, how many people here can play Good Riddance? Well, I can play it too!' He asked if we wanted him to play it or someone from the crowd and everyone roared 'YOU!' He said he'd play it and 'I won't mess it up.' He did burp though. There were people from all over at the show - Philippines, Singapore, China, Saudi, Korea and of course me from England ?
So happy you made your wish of seeing them in Jakarta a reality!! And thanks for the recount of show, sounds like a great one!!

They're nothing special but I posted most of my photos on the GDA Tumblr https://greendayauthority.tumblr.com/ And here are some of my favourites  I recorded Wake Me Up When September Ends and the band leaving the stage. I'll upload them to YouTube when I get home.

Way too many phones out in Macau and Jakarta seems like it ruins the vibe
