  • Crossbeat: 'I was a little surprised that such a big band would do a thorough sound check every time. The seriousness and level of concentration that bands at the top of the world have towards live performances is on a completely different level from other bands. Green Day's setlist changes every day, but it's not decided in advance, and things can be improvised in the middle of the song, so even the crew sometimes messes up the timing of the pyrotechnics. Especially with cover songs, Billie decides on them on the spot, so Mike sometimes says, "Huh? I only know the first three bars of that song (laughs)," which is quite a challenge. On January 24th, the band arrived in Saitama early because their performance was scheduled for 5 pm. After the show, they returned to the hotel and had dinner at the hotel's steakhouse. Billie and Tre devoured their Kobe beef steaks, saying how delicious they were. Mike ordered seafood. The excited members went to the bar next door for more wine, then took the wine bottle back to their room to continue drinking. The band members gathered in Tre's room. Another little party. But this party was so cute that you might think they were middle schoolers, not even high schoolers, and they enjoyed playing board games. They gathered in their hotel room night after night, playing Scrabble and backgammon. These three are truly heartwarmingly close friends. Can you imagine the three members of Green Day playing backgammon in a hotel after a concert?'
  • Yuri Nakajima for Crossbeat: 'The Drunk Bunny appeared, and the show started with a dance to the Village People's "Y.M.C.A." followed by a Ramones song. By chance, from my seat in the second-floor stands, I could see the aisle the band members walked down, and they came running up and down from quite far away from the stage. Seeing them leap onto the stage with that same energy and start playing, I thought to myself, “These guys really must love the moment when they appear in front of their fans during a live performance.” The first half of the setlist combined "21st Century Breakdown" and "American Idiot." The six-member lineup, including three support musicians, dynamically embodied the three-minute pop-punk song format. The rock and roll that bursts forth is even more thrilling in a live setting, with its dynamic shifts and changes in tempo. Early on, I was already thinking that they could just stick to songs from these two albums. Moreover, the visuals, fireworks, and pillars of fire explode in sync with the dizzying song development. It was Green Day's most spectacular show to date, and I was constantly thrilled, like a child at an amusement park. However, despite the large venue, it's surprising that the distance between the band and the fans hasn't changed at all since last May at Akasaka Blitz. Billie keeps bringing fans onto the stage, kneeling down to the girls and singing “¡Viva la Gloria!" and passing the microphone to the boys (good job, the guy who sang "Longview" perfectly!). He picks up cat ears and balaclavas thrown from the audience and puts them on. Despite being 38 years old and a father of two, Billie still exposes his butt to the audience; he's truly just a mischievous kid at heart. When playing consecutive shows at the same venue, the second nights tend to be more fun, and this day was a perfect example. During the cover song segment in the middle of the set, they performed songs different from other shows, such as AC/DC's "Highway to Hell" and Van Halen's version of The Kinks' "You Really Got Me." Furthermore, the medley at the end was a lengthy one, with additions such as The Penguins' "Earth Angel" and The Rolling Stones "Satisfaction." The band members seemed to be having so much fun at this point that the encore felt surprisingly brief, but that's also proof that the band themselves were enjoying the live performance as much as any fan.'
