John Kiffmeyer

John Kiffmeyer, nicknamed Al Sobrante, joined Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt in 1987 when the band was still known as Sweet Children. His connection to the Gilman Street scene helped the young band book early shows and establish itself locally.

Kiffmeyer played drums during Green Day's earliest years, including the period around 39/Smooth and the band's first national tour. In 1990, he left to attend college, and Billie Joe and Mike recruited Tre Cool as his replacement.
