Song Meaning

The message for this song in the ¡Dos! deluxe lyric book is: "And all that’s left is left behind… goodnight."

Billie Joe (Nylon Guys, 2012): “It was seeing that guitar and the people sitting there listening to [Amy Winehouse] play. All the emotions going on. Just feeling that… it just sucks to think of someone who really needed to be taken care of and… how it was just so… sad.”

Billie Joe: "I saw a video of [the late R&B artist Amy Winehouse] singing and playing guitar. I didn’t realize how great a guitar player she was. And that inspired me to write that song, kind of sending my condolences."

Billie Joe: "I felt like there was this connection between R&B of the past and R&B of the present. What [Amy Winehouse] did, her knowledge of old music and old Motown, it's something in the chain of music that is gone forever. She never got the help she needed. I know what it's like to go down a really dark path and I have had good people around me to help me survive. Maybe that's why I was able to relate to [her]."

Billie Joe (Rolling Stone, 2012): "Performers and artists kind of have a hole within themselves that they're constantly seeking to fill. They have a void in their lives. Of course, we all fill it with music. But for some people music isn't enough, or they don't think that it's enough. And so they spiral downward. And sometimes they spiral all the way done. But in [Amy Winehouse's] case you just look at what happened and think, 'What a terrible, terrible waste.'"

Fan interpretation: "As the closing track on ¡Dos!, this song brings an abrupt and poetic end to the crazy party that has dominated the album. The narrator reflects on what Amy [Winehouse] used to be, and what she experienced towards the end of her life. He wishes that he had been given a chance to know her, and that she wouldn't have moved on. The narrator also mentions her drinking problem, which she was never able to fully escape from. In remembering Amy Winehouse, the narrator closes out the crazy party theme by detailing the ill effects that this intense partying can have on one's physical and emotional self. She, to him, is the perfect example of a good time gone wrong, and a unique soul tragically lost forever."

Lyrics

Is your heart singing out of tune
Are your eyes just singing the blues?
Dirty records from another time
Some blood stains on your shoes

No one really knows about your soul
And I barely even know your name
Burning rhythms and posting lies
And a bunch of fools drown in shame

Amy don't you go
I want you around
Singin' whoa oh, please don't go
Do you wanna be a friend of mine?
Do you wanna be a friend of mine?

Did you tattoo a lucky charm
To keep you out of harm's way?
Warding off all evil signs
But they never really kept you safe

Now you're too young for the golden age
'Cause the record bin's been replaced
27 gone without a trace
And you walked away from your drink

Amy don't you go
I want you around
Singin' whoa oh, please don't go
Do you wanna be a friend of mine?
Do you wanna be a friend of mine?

Amy, please don't go
Amy, please don't go

Is your heart singing out of tune
Are your eyes just singing the blues?
Dirty records from another time
Some blood stains on your shoes

May I have this last dance
By chance if we should meet?
Can you write me a lullaby
So we can sing you to sleep?

Amy don't you go
I want you around
Singin' whoa oh, please don't go
Do you wanna be a friend of mine?
Do you wanna be a friend of mine?
