Nice Guys Finish Last
She (Live)
Song Meaning
Billie Joe Armstrong on how his ex-girlfriend Amanda inspired the song (VH1): "She gave me this poem about this empowering woman, which I think is called 'She.' I wrote the song as an answer back to her."
Billie Joe Armstrong (Vulture, 2024): "[She] was written for a girlfriend. She went to Cal Berkeley, and she was this feminist I learned a lot from. She was bringing her education home, and I was just trying to be a good listener. Listening to someone who had their frustrations in the world. Be a good man and listen to what this woman has to say. Don't interrupt, don't mansplain."
Billie Joe Armstrong (VH1): "I know [Adrienne] likes that song! I've been married for almost eight years, so Adrienne and I are comfortable enough that I've had a past. She's got a past, too. She was engaged, had boyfriends, had flings, and I'm comfortable with that, otherwise I wouldn't be married to her. Adrienne is the only woman I'll ever love."
Billie Joe Armstrong: "There really weren't any songs about [Adrienne] at that time. A lot of the songs are about this girl from San Diego, who went to Cal Berkeley. Adrienne and I weren't going out at the time. We lost contact with each other for about a year. She got engaged to a guy in Minneapolis. Then I got involved with this other girl. I lived in the basement in Berkeley with all these guys from the East Bay and she lived upstairs in the apartment. We ended up having this year-long relationship. The song 'She' was about her."

Lyrics
She screams in silence
A sullen riot penetrating through her mind
Waiting for a sign to smash the silence with the brick
of self control
Are you locked up in a world that's been planned out for you?
Are you feeling like a social tool without a use?
Scream at me until my ears bleed
I'm taking heed just for you
She's figured out all her doubts
Were someone else's point of view
Waking up this time to smash the silence with the brick
of self control
Are you locked up in a world that's been planned out for you?
Are you feeling like a social tool without a use?
Scream at me until my ears bleed
I'm taking heed just for you (2 x)
A sullen riot penetrating through her mind
Waiting for a sign to smash the silence with the brick
of self control
Are you locked up in a world that's been planned out for you?
Are you feeling like a social tool without a use?
Scream at me until my ears bleed
I'm taking heed just for you
She's figured out all her doubts
Were someone else's point of view
Waking up this time to smash the silence with the brick
of self control
Are you locked up in a world that's been planned out for you?
Are you feeling like a social tool without a use?
Scream at me until my ears bleed
I'm taking heed just for you (2 x)
