I Was a Teenage Teenager is the album's most directly nostalgic moment - Billie Joe (and the band) reflecting on what it actually felt like to be a teenager: "full of piss and vinegar," alienated, "an alien visitor," sure that "school is just for suckers." It's a song about how being 14 and stuck in your own head is a kind of low-grade misery you sometimes never fully shake.
The title is most likely a wink at Against Me!'s 2010 song "I Was a Teenage Anarchist." Green Day and Against Me! toured together in 2005 and again in 2017.
