[img=071811_ai_doors.jpg] After three and a half weeks of previews and 422 performances, "[turl=http://www.greendayauthority.com/projects/musical.php]American Idiot[/turl]" closed on Broadway on April 24, 2011. Within that time, the 24 plus cast entertained and thrilled the audience at the St. James. Now, these former Idiots have new projects, which range from stage readings to primetime television shows.

The three original male leads, John Gallagher, Jr., Stark Sands and Michael Esper, have probably been the busiest ones of the cast. Both Gallagher and Esper left the show at the end of February to join plays on Broadway and Off-Broadway, respectively. Gallagher ended his run as Lee in the Tony-nominated "Jerusalem" and he'll begin to film an Aaron Sorkin HBO pilot in Los Angeles. On the side, Gallagher performs his own songs, usually late Monday nights at Rockwood Music Hall on the Lower East Side.

Esper just wrapped up his role in "The Intelligent Homosexual's Guide to Capitalism and Socialism with a Key to the Scriptures" as well as the staged reading of "The Nightingale," a musical that was held at Vassar's Powerhouse Theatre. He'll be part of the Off-Broadway play, "The Lyons."

After leaving "American Idiot," Sands went to film the CBS pilot of "Rookies," which was picked up for a mid-season replacement with its new title, "The 2-2." Sands recently was married and will begin filming the first episodes of the CBS show.
Since leaving the show, two of the original female leads, Mary Faber and Christina Sajous have been performing in the Broadway musicals, "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" and "Baby, It's You," respectively. Rebecca Naomi Jones, who portrayed Whatsername during the entire Idiot run, will be in "A Maze," playing at the Vassar Powerhouse Theatre from July 20th to the 31st.

Other cast members are in productions across the US. Tony nominee Joshua Henry will in "Porgy and Bess" at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, MA from August to October and will transfer to Broadway later. Ben Thompson, Corbin Reid and Sean Michael Murray will appear in the Off-Broadway revival of "RENT," which begins July 14th at New World Stages. Andrew Call, Jeanna de Waal and Sydney Harcourt will be in "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego, CA.

[picbox=337]Jason Kappus becomes Link in "Hairspray" at the North Carolina Theatre in Raleigh, NC. After a run in Princeton, Aspen Vincent will travel to the West Coast and the La Jolla Playhouse to reprise her role in "Sleeping Beauty Wakes" starting July 19th. Mikey Winslow is traveling across the country as an ensemble member and Boq understudy for the first national tour of "Wicked." Justin Guarini will be in "Chicago" in Media, PA at the Media Theatre.

Many of the Idiots have been keeping busy with readings and workshops. Original "St. Jimmy" Tony Vincent did a reading of "Houdin." Jeanna de Waal joined Ben Thompson for the reading workshop of "Carrie." Theo Stockman took part of the "Veritas" reading held and Krystina Alabado wrapped up "Pregnancy Pact" workshops at Yale. Van Hughes is taking part of Eugene O'Neill Theater Center's National Music Theater Conference by performing in a musical in progress, "Son of a Gun," in Waterford, CT. Alysha Umphress is part of a stage reading of "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever" at the Vineyard Theatre, Off-Broadway.

A few Idiots are leaning more to their musical sides. Brian Charles Johnson and Chase Peacock continue to work on their musical duo, "Fran Sancisco." Declan Bennett is currently in the UK playing gigs in correlation to the release of his newest album, "record: BREAKUP." Other cast members' current or upcoming projects are unknown but they'll hopefully grace the stage again soon.

The [turl=http://www.greendayauthority.com/news/2289/]the American Idiot movie[/turl] is in production and with the pending North American "American Idiot" tour coming up, the cast is still unknown, along with whether any of the Broadway cast joined. However, keep on supporting and encouraging these actors and actresses, singers and musicians. They are a talented and hard-working group of individuals.
