Christian's Inferno

Green Day Released 2009

Song Meaning

Billie Joe Armstrong (NRJ, 2009): "Christian is sort of the opposite of Gloria, he's more about burning things down, he rustles and lets his demons get the best of him. Which is like self-destruction. But maybe there is some sort of balance within that."

Billie Joe Armstrong (Q Magazine, 2009): "I don't know if I was just having a bad morning but it's about that angry feeling of despair that I guess a lot of people can relate to."

Billie Joe Armstrong: "They're just photographs of what goes on inside my head - and wanting to connect with yourself, and your audience too. I'd like to write something more about joy and happiness. But for me, that's the release, putting it out there. To put it out there and create some kind of human connection and strive for something that's about humanity. It's like trying to battle past all those demons, your confusion and chaos, to reach something on the other side. I don't know why I'm like that. I've always felt desperate in some way."

Billie Joe Armstrong (Q Magazine, 2009): "Christian's Inferno is sort of the ugliest place you could possibly go to in your brain. A lot of people have a self-destruct button. I think for a lot of rock musicians when you're celebrating it turns into partying and then suddenly you're fucking yourself up and you're destroying something you worked so hard to build up. There's this shiny red button you just want to push."

Billie Joe Armstrong (laut.de, 2009): "Christian and Gloria are trying to find each other. They're stories inspired by personal experiences against the backdrop of the fucked-up America of the late Bush era, in which everyone is trying to pull something tangible out of the chaos and fight against internal and external enemies."

Billie Joe Armstrong (Q Magazine, 2009): "Christian's Inferno is like a subway ride to hell."

Billie Joe Armstrong (laut.de, 2009): "The main character is called Gloria. She is an idealistic, loyal fighter, always upright and with integrity. Her counterpart is called Christian, he is self-destructive and angry and would like to burn everything down. They represent two sides of the same person."

Lyrics

I got under the grip
Between the modern hell
I got the rejection letter in the mail and
It was already ripped to shreds.
Seasons in a ruin and
This bitter pill is chased with blood.
There's fire in my veins
And it's pouring out like a flood

Whoa, Christian's inferno
Whoa, Christian's inferno
Whoa, Christian's inferno
Whoa, Christian's inferno

This diabolic state is gracing my existence
Like a catasrophic baby
Maybe you're the chemical reaction
I am the atom bomb
I am the chosen one
Toxin your reservoir
And then return man to ape

Whoa, Christian's inferno
Whoa, Christian's inferno
Whoa, Christian's inferno
Whoa, Christian's inferno
