Dookie
Coming Clean
Song Meaning
Billie Joe has described "Coming Clean" as being about questioning his sexuality as a teenager. In a 2014 Rolling Stone interview about Dookie, he said it was "a song about questioning myself," tied to having feelings about "the same sex" and "the opposite sex," especially growing up around Berkeley and San Francisco where people were more openly exploring being gay, bisexual, transgender, etc.
That also lines up with what Billie Joe told The Advocate in 1995: "I think I've always been bisexual," adding that society teaches people sexuality is taboo when "it's not bad at all. It's a very beautiful thing."

Lyrics
Seventeen and strung out on confusion
Trapped inside a roll of disillusion
I found out what it takes to be a man
Mom and Dad will never understand
Secrets collecting dust but never forget
Skeletons come to life in my closet
I found out what it takes to be a man
Mom and Dad will never understand
What's happening to me
Seventeen and coming clean for the first time
I finally figured out myself for the first time
I found out what it takes to be a man
Mom and Dad will never understand
What happening to me
Trapped inside a roll of disillusion
I found out what it takes to be a man
Mom and Dad will never understand
Secrets collecting dust but never forget
Skeletons come to life in my closet
I found out what it takes to be a man
Mom and Dad will never understand
What's happening to me
Seventeen and coming clean for the first time
I finally figured out myself for the first time
I found out what it takes to be a man
Mom and Dad will never understand
What happening to me
