Biography
Rob Cavallo is a record producer, musician and record executive whose relationship with Green Day goes back to the early 1990s. After Kerplunk brought the band attention from several major labels, Cavallo helped sign Green Day to Reprise Records in 1993.
Cavallo produced Green Day's major-label debut, Dookie, alongside the band. Released in 1994, the album turned Green Day into one of the biggest bands in the world and began a partnership that would continue through much of their career. He returned for Insomniac in 1995 and Nimrod in 1997, helping the band expand beyond the sound of Dookie without losing what made them Green Day.
Green Day produced Warning themselves in 2000, with Cavallo credited as executive producer. He returned as producer for American Idiot in 2004, working with the band as they rebuilt the album after abandoning the Cigarettes and Valentines recordings. Cavallo also played piano on American Idiot.
Cavallo later produced Green Day's ¡Uno!, ¡Dos! and ¡Tré! trilogy, released in 2012. Cavallo reunited with Green Day for Saviors in 2024. It was their first full album together since the trilogy and brought his Green Day studio album total to eight: Dookie, Insomniac, Nimrod, American Idiot, ¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, ¡Tré! and Saviors.
Outside of Green Day, Cavallo has produced albums for artists including the Goo Goo Dolls, My Chemical Romance, Paramore, Shinedown, Dave Matthews Band, Fleetwood Mac, Kid Rock and Alanis Morissette. Some of his best-known work includes the Goo Goo Dolls' A Boy Named Goo and Dizzy Up the Girl, My Chemical Romance's The Black Parade and Paramore's Brand New Eyes. He is a three-time Grammy Award winner.
Cavallo began his career as an engineer in Los Angeles before joining Warner Bros. Records as an A&R representative in 1987. He was appointed Chief Creative Officer of Warner Music Group in 2009 and served as chairman of Warner Bros. Records from 2010 to 2012.
In 2021, he founded Done Deal Management, where he works with artists, producers and managers.
For Green Day, Cavallo has been more than the person behind the mixing console. He helped bring the band to a major label, produced two of the biggest albums of their career and has remained a trusted collaborator and friend for more than three decades.
