On Friday, a photograph of Billie Joe Armstrong holding a guitar was posted on Instagram. Nothing out of the ordinary so far, right?

The difference, however, was that this photo was taken inside a Western Australia recording studio, and captioned 'Recording Green Day'.

Music producer Charlie Young posted the photo, taken at Crank Recording in Perth, to his Instagram, along with the short-but-sweet caption.

One of the many things that hasn't been revealed is exactly what the band were recording. Could we be getting new Green Day music sooner than anyone would have expected, or are the band recording for a different project? With the lack of information available it's hard to say anything for sure, though it's pretty clear that the band have been doing something during their pre-tour 'downtime' in Australia.

The post, which is available in full below, shows a relaxed-looking Billie Joe standing by a guitar rig, with a drum kit visible to one side. The other band members aren't pictured, though the photo's caption suggests that they may have been present.

Green Day are currently Down Under for their Australia & New Zealand tour, which kicks off tonight at Perth Arena. Opening for the band are The Interrupters, who also provided support on the European leg of the tour earlier this year.
