  • "Green Day is three guys your parents wouldn't mind you being friends with - sweet-faced, innocent. I'd even let my sister marry Billie Joe, the curly-haired guitarist who took requests and explained politely at one point, "We already played "At the Library"." The drummer, Tre Cool he's called, wore one of those happy-face T-shirts but not the altered version with a dagger and dripping blood so popular with the kids."

A crowd of social misfits wearing green hats, shirts, socks, wristbands, pants, necklaces and shoes welcomed the Berkeley, Calif., pop-punk trio to Club No on Thursday night for a performance that was accidentally reminiscent of the days the Yardbirds played New York's Marquee and the Buzzcocks invaded London's Roxy.
