Song Meaning

The messages for this song in the ¡Uno! deluxe lyric book are:
"Love like a good horror film."
"The tattoo wore off. More like, 'Oh well.'"
"I talked myself out of... you."
"Even though I was never considered."
"TENSION."

Billie Joe (2012): “I’d been singing about hate and setting things on fire for so long. I guess it was about time I wrote about this.”

Billie Joe (Rolling Stone, 2012): "I hadn’t written about [girls] since Kerplunk. I just unleashed that part of my head. Whatever girl was on my mind from the past, present or future - or just combining different people into one song - I hadn’t tapped into the sexual part of it in so long. 'Oh Love' has that tension to it.”

Billie Joe (MTV, August 2012): "Oh Love is one of those songs that pulls at your heartstrings and is dabbling in romance a little bit and just getting carried away."

Mike Dirnt (MTV, July 2012): “It pulls from the heartstrings, and it’s about love and sexual tension and things like that; that said, I think the video is gonna tip its hat in those directions, I know we’ve got some real fun scenes that might involve motorcycles and us playing live and possibly some chaos backstage and things like that.”

Billie Joe (Billboard, 2012): "It just felt natural to start writing songs that are more, sexual tension, or living in the moment, it could be sexual tension... did I say sexual tension?"

Billie Joe (MTV, July 2012): "Oh Love’ is kind of like leading with your heart and not necessarily with your brain as much, and maybe losing your mind, and shooting a little bit more from the crotch area."

Billie Joe (Warner Music Poland interview, 2012): "Some songs are straight up about love, like, uh... a lot of songs. Oh Love, Fell For You, Sweet 16. Then it sort of dies into the human element. The brain and the heart and soul."

Billie Joe (Guitar World, 2012): "I think the first songs that were written were Stay the Night, Nuclear Family and Carpe Diem. So there was this power-pop thing happening. Then it became, like, 'Guys, no ballads. Let's just write rock and roll!' But all of a sudden Oh Love came out."

Fan interpretation (pasalaska on GDC): "Billie's lyrics are a calling to a lost or unrequited love; a sort-of loss of control after trying to supress those feelings for some time and moving on with life ('oh life, please don't pass me by'). That sudden loss of control seems to have come from a night of drinking and reflection: 'waste away tonight, tonight my heart's on the loose.' The third verse seems to suggest that he's trying to pull away from falling deeper in love with this person ('talk myself out of falling in love'), because he knows they don't feel the same, but at the same time he's enjoying the feeling of being in love. Obviously he's been through this cycle before, saying it's the 'same old story,' but that's not a strong enough deterrent, as he still longs to be 'close to you.'"

Lyrics

Oh love, oh love
Won't you rain on me tonight

Oh life, oh life
Please don't pass me by

Don't stop, don't stop
Don't stop when the red lights flash

Oh ride, free ride
Won't you take me close to you

Far away, far away
Waste away tonight
I'm wearing my heart on a noose

Far away, far away
Waste away tonight
Tonight my heart's on the loose

Oh lights, and action
I just can't be satisfied

Oh losers, and choosers
Won't you please hold on my life

Oh hours, and hours
Like the dog years of the day

Old story, same old story
Won't you see the light of day

Far away, far away
Waste away tonight
I'm wearing my heart on a noose
Far away, far away
Waste away tonight
Tonight my heart's on the loose

Talk myself out of feeling
Talk my way out of control
Talk myself out of falling in love
Falling in love with you

Oh love, oh love
Won't you rain on me tonight
Oh ride, free ride
Won't you take me close to you

Far away, far away
Waste away tonight
I'm wearing my heart on a noose
Far away, far away
Waste away tonight
Tonight my heart's on the loose
