Song Meaning
Mike Dirnt (BBC Radio One, 2012): “I think this song carries through to that feeling of longing that is running through our band at this point of our lives. Well, it’s also longing but driving yourself insane at the same time. There’s always that person you put on a pedestal and they can pull at your heartstrings all they want.”
Fan interpretation: "The narrator confides that, in a moment of weakness, he gave his heart to another person. He then quickly begins to defend himself, and hopes that his true partner will be able to recover. He hopes that his honesty will lessen the blow of the negativity that he forced on his partner. In the refrain, the narrator begins to gush, and wants his partner to know just how much they mean to him. He has now realized that he doesn't need anything from anyone else, and just wants to come back home. He feels foolish for making this mistake, and knows that he'll 'never let go' again."
Fan interpretation: "Stray Heart sounds like a generic song in which a partner apologises for cheating, yet the line, 'Everything I want, I want from you, but I just can't have you,' implies the narrator has never actually been with the person the song is about, or has only just found his way to them. So it could also be interpreted as an apology to the narrator's true love for pursuing the wrong person. He's promising he'll 'never stray again' if his true love reciprocates his feelings, like he begs her to 'give in one more time' in 'Stop When the Red Lights Flash.' There could also be two narrators: one who's apologising for cheating, and one who feels they 'just can't have' their own partner because of their infidelity. Or perhaps it's blurry simply because it's all fantasy."
Stray Heart is the only song on ¡Dos! that has no message in the deluxe lyric book, perhaps because it was originally on ¡Tré! which had no messages.
