Saviors
1981
Song Meaning
The lyrics drop you straight into Reagan-era cable TV chaos: "commies and cocaine," East Berlin, "fifteen minutes of fame," "champagne and party lines," "slam dance in acid rain." It's not a love letter to the era. It's a reminder that the "good old days" had a Cold War, an arms race, and a lot of self-destruction.
The "she's gonna bang her head like 1981" hook treats the era like a girl who can't be saved from herself, and the repeated "so long, farewell" drives it home.
Critic interpretation (National Catholic Reporter, February 2024): "'1981' satirizes people's nostalgia for the good old days of the allegedly simpler times that instead featured the Cold War, 'commies and cocaine.'"

Lyrics
She's gonna bang her head like 1981
She's gonna bang her head like 1981 (so long, farewell)
She's gonna bang her head like 1981
She's gonna bang her head like 1981
She's throwing punches to the beat
To the sound of cable TV
And she'll never see the world the same
She is a Cold War in my head
And I am East Berlin
On the danger side of parts unknown
Coffee and cyanide for lovers in disgrace
If this is not a test, we got one foot in the grave
She's gonna bang her head like 1981
She's gonna bang her head like 1981 (so long, farewell)
She's gonna bang her head like 1981
She's gonna bang her head like 1981
Crimes from another time
Champagne and party lines
God bless the end of times
Pain, commies, and cocaine
Slam dance in acid rain
We live the dream for fifteen minutes of fame
She's gonna bang her head like 1981
She's gonna bang her head like 1981 (so long, farewell)
She's gonna bang her head like 1981
She's gonna bang her head like 1981 (so long, farewell)
(So long, farewell)
She's gonna bang her head like 1981 (so long, farewell)
