Stay Young
Song Meaning
This one hits like a straight-up loss song, but it's intentionally a little vague about what kind of loss. It could be someone who died, someone who changed, or even just growing apart, but the feeling is the same. There's that awkward, heavy distance in the opening where nothing can be said anymore, and even looking at them feels wrong because "everything fades and dies." The "I imagine you're a star" line leans toward death, or at least putting someone on this unreachable pedestal, like they exist somewhere above you now instead of beside you.
The "stay young" hook is doing most of the emotional work. It sounds like both a wish and a regret, like wanting to freeze someone in the version they used to be before things went bad. There's also a subtle push against conformity, like they lost what made them different by becoming "like everyone." So it lands somewhere between mourning and frustration, holding onto a memory of who someone was while dealing with the reality that they're gone.
Fan interpretation (Last.fm wiki): "A bittersweet song about when people depart too soon, it deals with regret, what could have been, and finding solace that in a way the departed will stay young forever."

Lyrics
Here we are, face to face
Now you're gone, I'm a mess
There's no words like before
And there's nothing I can say
Can't look at you in your eyes (Your eyes)
'Cause everything fades and dies
Stay young, stay young
Stay young, stay young
Stay young, stay young
Stay young, stay young
Stay young, you didn't have to be like everyone
So stay young, stay
I regret what we are
Do you know what we were?
I imagine you're a star
Always there overhead
Now all I can do is pretend (Pretend)
'Cause everything good must end
Stay young, stay young
Stay young, stay young
Stay young, stay young
Stay young, stay young
So stay young, you didn't have to be like everyone
So stay young, stay
So stay young, you can never be like everyone
So stay young, stay
Stay young, stay young
Stay young, stay young
Stay young, stay young
Stay young, stay young
Stay young, you didn't have to be like everyone
So stay young, stay young
Now you're gone, I'm a mess
There's no words like before
And there's nothing I can say
Can't look at you in your eyes (Your eyes)

Stay young, stay young
Stay young, stay young
Stay young, stay young
Stay young, stay young

So stay young, stay
I regret what we are

So stay young, stay young
