[pic=21st Century Breakdown]051514_21cb.jpg[/pic]Five years ago today, Green Day's eighth studio album, 21st Century Breakdown, was released.

Produced by Butch Vig and the band themselves, the 18-track, three-act album debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Top 200 chart as it sold 215,000 copies in the first week of sales in the US. The number one spot and the 200,000+ sales were impressive considering that the album was released on a Friday and only had four days of sales for the "week."

21st Century Breakdown was a highly anticipated album as it was the follow up to the massively successful American Idiot. Despite comments from critics and the musical exploration from the band, the album peaked at No. 1 in many countries outside of the US including Canada, France, Germany, Japan, and the UK.

21st Century Breakdown spawned five singles: "Know Your Enemy," "21 Guns," "East Jesus Nowhere," "21st Century Breakdown," and "Last of the American Girls." The first two singles both charted very well in the US with the former reaching No. 1 on a few Billboard Rock charts. All of the album's singles were treated to a music video; the title track arguably being one of the best the band has done over their entire career (so far).

A handful of extra tracks were released with the album, including the b-sides "Lights Out" and "Hearts Collide," which were released on the Know Your Enemy EP.

As bonus tracks on the iTunes and Amazon digital pre-orders, the band released four covers: "A Quick One While He's Away" by the Who, "Another State of Mind" by Social Distortion, "That's All Right" originally by Arthur Crudup, and "Like a Rolling Stone" by Bob Dylan.

All the b-sides and bonus tracks can be purchased from iTunes and Amazon as part of The Green Day Collection.

Celebrate today by listening to the album and reminiscing with us the release day and the years leading up to it.
