Green Day's "Nimrods" movie is now playing in theaters
After a few years of waiting, Nimrods is officially in theaters today. If you're looking to catch-up, here's our collection of stories about the movie.
The Green Day-produced comedy opens across the U.S. today, August 14th, following the global event screenings that began earlier this week. You can find theaters, showtimes and tickets through the official Nimrods website. We also have a guide to the international release and screenings.
Nimrods isn't a Green Day biopic. The movie follows three high school friends who hit the road for Los Angeles after mistakenly believing their band, the Analog Dogs, has been booked to open for Green Day on New Year's Eve. The fictional story was inspired by Green Day's own early years crammed into a van, driving around the country and playing wherever they could before Dookie.
Billie Joe, Mike and Tré produced the movie and appear as themselves. It was written and directed by Lee Kirk, who previously directed Billie Joe in 2016's Ordinary World. Mason Thames, Kylr Coffman and Ryan Foust play the three members of the Analog Dogs, with Mckenna Grace, Jenna Fischer, Angela Kinsey, Fred Armisen, Bobby Lee and Sean Gunn also appearing.
Green Day fans who caught the August 11th screenings have been pretty damn positive, with a recurring theme from people who went in with modest expectations and came out surprised by how much they enjoyed it. On the Green Day Community, fans have praised the three young leads, the chemistry, the soundtrack and the number of Green Day references packed into the movie. Several people also mentioned seeing it with family members or partners who aren't particularly big Green Day fans and said they enjoyed it too, which is a good sign that it's more than just Green Day references.
Critics have been a little more reserved, but still mostly positive. At the time of writing, Rotten Tomatoes has Nimrods at 78% from 37 reviews, with critics praising the cast, their chemistry and the movie's good-natured approach. SFGate's Dan Gentile reviewed the film last year and said:
If you're waiting to watch it at home, there's no streaming release date yet. The official site currently lists Nimrods as a theatrical exclusive with streaming availability still to be announced.
The Nimrods soundtrack is also out now, including Green Day's new song "I'm Never Gonna R.I.P.," previously unreleased live recordings and songs from the Analog Dogs, written by Jacob Danger Armstrong. Here's our story related to the soundtracks release.

"The trio of punks, played by newcomers Mason Thames, Kylr Coffman and Ryan Foust, have excellent chemistry and deliver spot-on performances as bickering bandmates."
