[pic=Sweet Children on stage]041715_sweet.jpg[/pic]Green Day played a historic and electric gig last night at the House of Blues in Cleveland, Ohio. Fellow GDA editor Jack and I attended the show and were left speechless afterwards.

We hope to bring you a writeup in our own words of this entire weekend of festivities within the next few days but until then, check out various articles recapping the band's performance below from Rolling Stone, Cleveland(dot)com, and Spin.

Rolling Stone: Green Day return to the stage with a raucous, career-spanning Cleveland gig

"I feel like we've been through puberty together," said Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong toward the close of the band's joyous, marathon show at Cleveland's House of Blues last night. It was their first U.S. show in two years and much of the adoring throng was middle-aged guys and girls reveling in the soundtrack of their teenage years, many of whom came to the all-ages show with their kids. In town for Saturday's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony — they're being inducted into the Ohio institution alongside Joan Jett, Lou Reed, Ringo Starr, among others — the band tore through a three-hour show which included a surprise warm-up set with the band's original drummer, John Kiffmeyer, who played on the band's early EPs in 1989-'90 before giving way to Green Day's current drummer, Tré Cool. Cleveland: New Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Green Day thrills with marathon show

Pop quiz, kiddies: How much Green Day is too much Green Day? Ha! Three solid hours of Green Day -- playing tunes from their Sweet Children days all the way to their latest trilogy, "Uno!,'' "Dos!,'' and "Tre!'' -- proved one thing, and proved it emphatically: The band DESERVES to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. SPIN: Green Day Turn Back Time at the House of Blues

Besides the Foo Fighters‘ Record Store Day gig, the most in-demand ticket in Northeast Ohio this week was Green Day‘s Thursday night concert in Cleveland at the city’s cozy House of Blues. Not only was this show at a far smaller venue than what the band usually play, it was also the band’s first U.S. show in two years. The one-off gig was a precursor to this weekend, when the Bay Area trio are being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. Family members and band associates were in attendance, while the occasional celebrity sighting underscored that this show was something unique. (Read more...)
